‘Black Panther’ Musical Artist Puts Her Hat in the Ring To Play Storm in the MCU
Black Panther singer and One Of Them Days star, SZA, is ready to take this whole acting thing a bit more seriously — super seriously, in fact. And considering she already has one foot in the door at Marvel thanks to her award-winning song with Kendrick Lamar, “All the Stars” from the 2018 film, we could see one particular “dream role” of hers becoming a reality. After all, she’s already technically played a superhero once before (albeit for a State Farm commercial).
But while speaking to fellow singer/actress Jennifer Hudson on her eponymous daytime talk show, SZA revealed she’d love to tackle the origin story of Ororo Munroe — better known to comic book fans as Storm, a role originally inhabited by none other than Halle Berry (and more recently Alexandra Shipp). And you know what? We could totally see her pulling it off. (Sorry, fellow Storm wannabe Cynthia Erivo.)

Janet Jackson, who has had a successful acting career in addition to ruling the music charts, had to turn the X-Men role down to go on tour.

Talking about wanting to do “a thriller, something a little violent,” host Hudson (herself an actress and singer) insisted that she could see the rapper portraying a superhero. To which SZA gleefully replied, “I would love to be a superhero!” before adding:
“I was thinking, you know how Storm has an origin story? Like she comes from this whole other place where it’s like the jungle. I think that would be so gnarly, if I could be Storm [in an] origin story. I’d love to bring the range.”

SZA’s Dad Is A Total Nerd And Got Her Into Comic Books As A Kid Close
SZA also named Silver Surfer as one of her favorite superheroes, thanks to her father’s nerdy obsession. “My dad, he collects first-edition comics, so he has first-edition Thor comics and Silver Surfer [comics] in the basement. So I grew up super into Marvel and DC.”
Now, can somebody please tell her father to move those comics into a safer location? His girl blew up his spot!
Of course, SZA is not the only person who wants to play the iconic superhero. Recently, Cynthia Erivo noted that she’d like to play the part, as has the actress Storm Reid. Elsewhere on the internet, American Gods star Yetide Badaki has also expressed interest in inhabiting Storm’s super-suit. With rumors swirling that Halle Berry wants to reprise the role, only time will tell who gets to play this generation’s version of Storm.
