Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse – Everything We Know, Trailer, Release
Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors
Will Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse release in 2025? Unfortunately not, but there’s plenty to get you excited for Sony’s highly anticipated animated Spider-Man film.
Capping off the trilogy that began with 2018’s acclaimed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and continued with 2023’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the third installment was originally set for release on March 29, 2024. Delays got in the way, however, pushing the premier to 2026 at the very earliest.
With the previous films earning widespread critical acclaim, including an Oscar nomination for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in the Best Animated Feature category, expectations are high for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Here’s everything we know so far.
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse Story
Directed by both Bob Persichetti – who co-directed the first movie – and Justin K Thompson – who co-directed the second movie, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse looks set to pick up directly where the cliffhanger ending of Across the Spider-Verse left off, with Miles confronting his own variant in an alternative universe. He’ll not only have to contend with a foe as equally powerful as he is but find a way to return to his own universe and save his dad.
It’ll be the last film in the Spider-Verse series, with producer Christopher Miller telling Deadline it “will be a very satisfying conclusion…It goes even more emotionally deep into the relationships between Miles, Gwen, Peter B., [and Miles’] parents.”
As well as that, co-director Kemp Powers tells SFX of the cliffhanger ending, “We hope that it’s a satisfying tee-up for what’s coming in the third film because you want people to be excited about what’s coming next. And it helps that we knew going in that this was part two of a three-part story. Since you already know that that third story is guaranteed, you can tackle it a bit differently.”
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Recap
In Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Miles discovers the Spider Society HQ, a base for various Spider-Man from across the multiverse. Here, he meets Miguel, a ruthless Spider-Man variant who tells Miles he’s triggered an imminent universal collapse by saving the police captain in Mumbattan and disrupting a canon event.
The future death of Miles’ father is another cannon event that needs to happen if the universe is to survive. Miles obviously wants to avoid it, though, so he escapes the Spider Society and heads back home.
Instead, where he actually ends up is Earth-42, and here, nothing is quite right. His uncle is alive (he’s The Prowler from the first movie), his dad is already dead, and that universe’s Miles is actually The Prowler.
Shameik Moore is the star of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, reprising his role for the second time (three times in total) as Spider-Man/Miles Morales. A teenager with incredible powers, he’s now trapped in an alternative universe with his life, and his dad’s, on the line.
He’s joined by love interest Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld), and ally Pavitr Prabhakar (Karan Soni), who both have superhuman spider powers of their own. Jason Schwartzman is also back as Dr. Johnathon Ohnn / The Spot, a former scientist covered with interdimensional portals.
“Action,” Moore tells ScreenRant of what viewers are in for. “You can expect Miles and Gwen. You can expect everything you’re expecting from the second one. You can expect to see The Spot; you can expect some action-packed energy and some dilemmas and problems to solve.”

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse Release Date
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse does not currently have a release date, although it’s expected to hit cinemas in mid-2026. Sony Pictures Releasing is also prepping a release on IMAX, so you can enjoy it on the biggest screen possible.
“They are beavering away on it as we speak,” the film’s composer Daniel Pemberton tells GamesRadar+. “I think the main thing for everyone is we are so proud of what we have done on these movies and you want a classic trilogy, you don’t want to let it down, you don’t want to Godfather it. We are feeling added pressure – in capital letters, underlined, with a big exclamation mark at the end.”
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse Delay
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse has been hit with numerous delays. Its development stretches all the way back to early 2018, when Sony initially mapped out its follow-up to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
The call was made to split the increasingly ambitious sequel into two films. While the first released in 2023, production delays and the SAG-AFTRA strike of 2024 had an impact on voice recording and performance capture for the next one.
