Max Series Gets Canceled After Near-Perfect RT Score Dropped to 29% for Season 3

Two months after The Sex Lives of College Girls ended its third season, Max has canceled the raunchy comedy series that centers around four roommates at Essex College in Vermont. Per Deadline, the Warner Bros. series, co-created by and executive produced by Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble, is looking for a new home.

Warner Bros., the producing studio behind The Sex Lives of College Girls, is reportedly seeking a way to take the show to a fourth season, possibly with Netflix, as Kaling has a long relationship with the streamer. However, the move may be a long shot. Deadline stated that a rep for Warner Bros. Television declined to comment on the matter.

The Sex Lives of College Girls starred Reneé Rapp, Pauline Chalamet, Amrit Kaur, Alyah Chanelle Scott, Renika Williams, Christopher Meyer, and Ilia Isorelýs Paulino.

The Departure of one of the Series Stars May Have Been its Downfall

The Max series started facing issues when one of its original cast members, Reneé Rapp (Mean Girls), left the show a few episodes into the series’ third season. Season 3 also did not match the fan and critic response as the first two seasons, as ratings were down for the third season. Additionally, per review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the third season of The Sex Lives of College Girls also paled in comparison to the first two. Season 3 had a “Rotten” 29% critic score, while the first two seasons had 97% and 93% critic scores.

Could the Series Find a New Home?

As for whether The Sex Lives of College Girls ends up on Netflix, it remains to be seen as typically moving a series from one streamer to another has been difficult in the past. In the past, Universal TV’s Girls5eva switched from Peacock to Netflix after its first two seasons, and Warner Bros. TV’s Dead Boy Detectives moved from Max to Netflix, so it can be done.

To make the move in the case of The Sex Lives of College Girls, Netflix would have to secure the rights to the first three seasons of the show from Max and international outlets as well. Another layer to the matter is that The Sex Lives of College Girls was part of the streamer’s first wave of original programming when it changed from HBO Max to Max in 2021.
