‘It Looked Very, Very Authentic’: Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Noir Co-Star Teases Black and White Release

Amazon MGM Studios’ upcoming live-action Spider-Noir series is shaping up to be one of the most visually distinct Marvel adaptations to date.

Set in a gritty, crime-ridden version of 1930s New York, the show will introduce a unique take on the Spider-Man mythos, starring Con Air’s Nicolas Cage as the hardened, noir-inspired hero. While Cage previously voiced the character in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), this will mark his first live-action portrayal of the fan-favorite alternate-universe Spider-Man.

While many details about Spider-Noir remain under wraps, the series is expected to fully embrace the classic film noir aesthetic. According to Spider-Noir co-star Lukas Haas in an interview with ComingSoon, Spider-Noir was shot in a way that captures the shadowy, dramatic visuals of classic noir cinema.

“It was just an incredible project,” Haas shared in the interview. “We filmed it in — I think it may come out in both black and white and color, but when we filmed it, the monitors were all black and white, so you got this feeling and it looked very, very authentic.” This statement suggests that Spider-Noir could receive two different versions — one presented in traditional color and another released in stark black and white, evoking the cinematic style of the 1930s.

Haas went on to praise the production’s commitment to capturing the noir look, explaining that the cinematography, lighting, and filters all contributed to its striking visual style. “They did a beautiful job with the filters and all that stuff, making it look like genuine old 1930s black and white film,” he added. “Just getting to do that noir thing — it was very genuine film noir, the way they filmed it, like the long shadows.” His comments indicate that Spider-Noir will aim for a level of authenticity rarely seen in modern superhero projects, fully immersing audiences in its stylized world.

A Bold New Take on the Marvel Universe

Unlike traditional Peter Parker stories, Spider-Noir will explore a more hardened and morally complex version of Spider-Man. In this universe, the character operates in a city plagued by crime syndicates, corruption, and a bleak sense of justice, embodying the noir storytelling tradition of classic detective films. Cage’s portrayal of this version of Spider-Man in Into the Spider-Verse was praised for its deadpan humor and old-school detective persona, making him a perfect fit for a live-action interpretation.

The series also boasts an impressive supporting cast for Spider-Noir, Brendan Gleeson, Lamorne Morris, and Li Jun Li. With its ambitious visual style, period-accurate storytelling, and unique approach to the superhero genre, Spider-Noir is shaping up to be a groundbreaking addition to the Marvel universe.

When Will Spider-Noir Be Released?

An official premiere date has yet to be announced, but Spider-Noir will debut first on MGM+ before eventually landing on Amazon Prime Video. Given the level of craftsmanship being put into the project, the possibility of a black-and-white release could make Spider-Noir one of the most stylistically daring superhero adaptations to date.
