Tony Roberts Dies: The Woody Allen Film Actor And Broadway Star Was 85

Tony Roberts, who appeared in six Woody Allen films and had an active career in television and on Broadway, died of lung cancer on Friday. He was 85.

Born David Anthony Roberts in Manhattan on October 22, 1939, he made his Broadway debut at the age of 23 in 1962’s Something About a Soldier. In 1965, he replaced Robert Redford in the original production of Neil Simon’s Barefoot in the Park. Three years later he was nominated for the Tony for Best Actor in a musical for his performance in 1968’s How Now, Dow Jones.

In Annie Hall in 1977, Roberts portrayed Rob, the best friend of Woody Allen’s Alvy Singer. Other Allen movies he appeared in were Radio Days, Stardust Memories, Hannah and Her Sisters and A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy.

Roberts married dancer Jennifer Lyons in 1969. They divorced in 1975. He is survived by his daughter, Nicole.
