Zoe Saldaña Shares Candid Response to ‘Emilia Perez’ Co-Star Controversy

Emilia Perez has undoubtedly become one of Hollywood’s most talked-about films this year, earning an impressive 13 Oscar nominations. Among the accolades are nominations for its lead actors, Karla Sofia Gascón and Zoe Saldaña. However, Gascón, a veteran actress starring in more than forty films, has recently faced backlash over offensive tweets, prompting Saldana to address the controversy surrounding her co-star’s social media comments.

In a recent interview with Variety for the upcoming episode of the Awards Circuit Podcast, Saldaña, who starred as Rita in Emilia Perez alongside Gascón, expressed her thoughts on the mounting controversy, emphasizing the importance of personal responsibility. In her words,

“I feel like I’ve spoken enough about it. I do not support any negative rhetoric of racism and bigotry towards any group of people. That is what I want to stand for. I’m allowing myself to still experience that joy because we did come together as a team. But we are also individuals who are responsible for everything that we say and everything that we do. I can’t attest to what people do in their private time with their private handles.”

Despite the controversy, Saldana remains optimistic that Emilia Perez will remain unaffected and continue to receive support from the audiences as the Academy Awards approach.

The Spanish actor, who has recently become the first transgender actress to be openly nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress, previously wrote several offensive tweets about sensitive topics such as Islam and the late George Floyd. Although these tweets date way back to 2020, they have recently surfaced online after her Oscar nomination, forcing her to delete some tweets after certain users uncovered them.

For example, weeks after the death of George Floyd, whom she described as “a martyr hero,” she tweeted the following:

“I truly believe that very few people ever cared about George Floyd, a drug addict and a hustler, but his death has served to highlight once again that there are those who still consider Black people to be monkeys without rights and those who consider the police to be murderers. All wrong. It is no longer a question of racism but social classes that feel threatened by each other.”

In November 2020, Gascón also made some offensive comments against Islam, citing, “Until we ban religions that go against European values and violate human rights, such as Islam, under the protection of freedom of worship, we will not end part of the huge problem we face. Faith manipulates those who cling to faith.”

Karla Sofía Gascón Has Deactivated Her X Account Close

For years, Gascón has been posting displeasing tweets, but she has never been in the spotlight, like when she was nominated for Best Actress for Emilia Perez. Following the recent controversy, the actress deactivated her X account and issued the following statement:

“I’m sorry, but I can no longer allow this campaign of hate and misinformation to affect me and my family, so at their request I am closing my account on X. I have been threatened with death, insulted, abused and harassed to the point of exhaustion. I have a wonderful daughter to protect, whom I love madly and who supports me in everything.”
