Neil Gaiman’s ex Amanda Palmer denies nanny’s rape and coercion claims

READ MORE: Claims Palmer ‘slept with female fan she gave to Gaiman like a toy’

Amanda Palmer, the estranged wife of fantasy author Neil Gaiman, has denied allegations of negligence made by a woman who worked for them.

In a lawsuit filed in the US states of Wisconsin, Massachusetts and New York on Monday, Scarlett Pavlovich claimed Palmer befriended her in New Zealand when she was 22 and homeless, and this led to her working for the couple.

According to the lawsuits, the woman claims Gaiman sexually assaulted her and alleged Palmer had told her about previous complaints from more than a dozen different women.

Best-selling British author Gaiman, 64, denied allegations in January of sexual assault made against him by eight women, which first emerged in reporting by Tortoise Media last summer.

Pavlovich identified herself as an alleged victim of sexual assault in an interview with New York Magazine last month, one of eight women to have claimed to have been a victim of assault, abuse and coercion by Gaiman.

She is seeking at least $7million (£5.6million) in damages from the author, whose career spans more than four decades, and Palmer, whom she alleges was privy to the writer’s sexual desires and presented her to him knowing he would assault her.

Palmer made a short post on Instagram to her 238,000 followers on Friday night in which she explicitly denied the allegations but declined to comment further.

She branded the episode an ‘extremely difficult moment’, and asked for privacy for her eight-year-old son Anthony, also known as Ash, who she had with Gaiman in 2015.

On Instagram, The Dresden Dolls member Palmer wrote: ‘I thank you all deeply for continuing to respect my recent request for privacy as I navigate this extremely difficult moment.

‘I must protect my young child and his right to privacy.

‘With that as my priority, I will not respond to the specific allegations being made against me except to say that I deny the allegations and will respond in due course.’

She added: ‘My heart goes out to all survivors.’

The lawsuits allege the couple violated laws on federal human trafficking, with complaints of assault, battery and inflicting emotional distress against Gaiman and negligence against 48-year-old Palmer.

Palmer has previously written on Instagram that she is in a custody and divorce battle with Gaiman, and was unable to ‘offer public comment’.

She added: ‘Please understand that I am first and foremost a parent.’

Since eight allegations were made against Gaiman in New York Magazine in January, his publisher Dark Horse Comics cancelled another comic book of the Anansi Boys series.

A UK stage adaptation of his book Coraline has been scrapped, and the estate of English author Sir Terry Pratchett removed him from a project funding proposal for a Good Omens comic book based on the book he wrote with the Discworld author.

Last month, Netflix said that a TV series of Gaiman’s dark fantasy work The Sandman, starring British actor Tom Sturridge, will end with its second series later this year.

Dresden Dolls member Palmer made a short post on Instagram (above) denying Pavlovich’s claims on Friday

Allegations about Gaiman have led to the effective cancellation of series three of Good Omens (pictured) – with the season replaced by a 90-minute feature length finale

A stage adaptation of Gaiman’s book Coraline, which has also been made into a feature film (pictured), has also been scrapped

Season three of Good Omens – starring David Tennant and Michael Sheen – has been reduced to a feature-length episode that will wrap the series up for good. Producers Amazon say Gaiman is not involved in its production.

A film of The Graveyard Book has also been shelved.

In January 2023, a police report was made in New Zealand, accusing Gaiman of sexual assault. The investigation was later dropped.

But the traumatic accounts of five women alleging rape and sexual abuse were published by Tortoise Media in July.

In a blog post, Gaiman said he had read the allegations, which he denies, with ‘horror and dismay’ and said he was ‘not as thoughtful as I could or should have been’ and he is still ‘learning’.

He wrote: ‘I’ve stayed quiet until now, both out of respect for the people who were sharing their stories and out of a desire not to draw even more attention to a lot of misinformation.

‘As I read through this latest collection of accounts, there are moments I half-recognise and moments I don’t, descriptions of things that happened sitting beside things that emphatically did not happen.

‘I’m far from a perfect person, but I have never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity with anyone. Ever.’

Palmer founded The Dresden Dolls with Brian Viglione in 2000 and was part of the singing duo Evelyn Evelyn with Jason Webley.

The singer-songwriter tied the knot with Gaiman in 2011 and they announced the birth of their son in 2015.

In a shared statement with Gaiman they revealed they were getting divorced in 2022, saying: ‘After many years of marriage, we have made the difficult decision to divorce.

‘While we will no longer be partners in marriage, we will remain in one another’s lives as co-parents committed to raising our wonderful son in a loving and compassionate environment.

‘We deeply appreciate everyone respecting our family’s privacy so we can focus on our son as we enter this new chapter in our lives.’

Demi Moore continues winning streak at Critics Choice Awards – as Zoe Saldana and Adrien Brody also take home top prizes

After winning a Golden Globe for her performance in The Substance, a film which highlights the harsh reality of ageing in Hollywood, star Demi Moore has now picked up a Critics Choice award – and is a favourite for next month’s Oscars ceremony.

Demi Moore, Zoe Saldana, Kieran Culkin and Adrien Brody are among the big winners of this year’s Critics Choice Awards.

Moore took home the best actress award for her performance in The Substance, in which she plays a fading Oscar winner who discovers a black-market drug to create a younger model of herself.

The prize adds to her Golden Globe win and Oscar nomination in what has been her first acknowledgement for major Hollywood awards, after decades in the business.

“This has been such a wild ride, I can’t tell you when I started this journey on this film, I could never imagine being here,” the 62-year-old said as she collected her award at the ceremony in Santa Monica, Los Angeles. “This is so far beyond anything I could have hoped for.”

The actress, who is now an Oscars frontrunner, added: “For anybody out there who is still on their journey, who is still struggling to find their way… because it hasn’t happened, it doesn’t mean it isn’t happening – dreams do come true.”

Coralie Fargeat, the filmmaker behind The Substance, also collected the award for best original screenplay, while the film also picked up a third prize for hair and make-up.

Anora, a film about a sex worker who marries the son of a Russian oligarch, was named best picture, while papal thriller Conclave, which stars Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci and Isabella Rossellini, picked up the gong for best acting ensemble.

Blockbuster musical adaptation Wicked picked up three prizes, including best director for John M Chu.

Brody, another Golden Globe winner and Oscars favourite, was named best actor for his performance as a Hungarian-Jewish architect in The Brutalist, while Saldana and Culkin won awards in the supporting categories for their roles in Emilia Perez and A Real Pain respectively.

Emilia Perez, a Spanish-language musical thriller about a Mexican drug lord who changes gender, was also named best foreign language film and was honoured for best song for El Mal, which features Saldana, Karla Sofia Gascon and Camille Dalmais.

The film leads the nominations for this year’s Oscars, but has faced controversy in recent weeks after old social media posts by Gascon, taking aim at Islam and George Floyd, came to light.

Deadpool & Wolverine, starring Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, shared the best comedy prize with A Real Pain, in which Culkin and director Jesse Eisenberg play cousins visiting Poland to honour their grandmother.

Reynolds shared news of the win on Instagram, writing: “Zing! Thanks Critics Choice – whole team is thrilled. But wait a minute.”

He then encouraged followers to “swipe” to see A Real Pain had also collected the award, and wished the film’s cast and crew a “huge congrats”.

‘Thank you, Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively…’

Reynolds’ wife Blake Lively was the subject of a joke by awards host Chelsea Handler during her opening monologue, following the recent controversy involving the actress and her It Ends With Us co-star and director Justin Baldoni.

“I want to acknowledge that we’ve been through a lot lately, not just here in Los Angeles, but our entire country,” Handler said. “Waking up every day, not knowing what news we are going to hear that will disappoint or horrify us.

“So, it is important in times like these to have a distraction. And that’s why I want to personally extend my gratitude… to Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively. Thank you for providing us with that distraction. I’m grateful. I think we’re all grateful.”

In the TV categories, historical drama Shogun, which is set in Japan, dominated the drama section, taking home the best drama award and three of the four acting prizes for stars Hiroyuki Sanada, Moeka Hoshi and Tadanobu Asano.

Hacks was named best comedy series, with star Jean Smart named best comedy actress, while Baby Reindeer was named best limited series and star Jessica Gunning named best supporting actress.

The awards ceremony took place on Friday after being postponed numerous times due to the wildfires that broke out across Los Angeles in January.

Who will represent the UK at Eurovision? Act ‘confirmed’ by BBC Radio 1 hosts

The UK’s artist for the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 appears to have been announced this week despite the BBC choosing not to comment yet.

BBC Radio 1 hosts Nat O’Leary and Vicky Hawkesworth announced the UK act for Eurovision 2025 during their show on Friday, February 7.

Rumours that have circulated about the act being a girl band appear to be correct – here’s what we know.

According to the radio presenters, Remember Monday, a country girl band, will represent the country in the international singing competition with their song still to be revealed.

On Friday’s edition of Group Chat With Nat And Vicky, the presenters said that it isn’t the first time the girl band has been involved in a singing competition.

Announcing the news, Nat and Vicky said: “Now we have to talk a little about Eurovision because we’ve gone a different route this year.

“So this year they’re going for a country theme and country is having its moment, still, which I’m really glad to see, we saw Beyonce win album of the year at the Grammys for Cowboy Carter and now this girl band, which are called Remember Monday, are going to be representing us at Eurovision this year.

“So we’ve got Lauren Byrne, Holly-Anne Hull, and Charlotte Steel, and they’ve already been on TV, they’ve been on The Voice in 2019, so they know what they’re doing, they’ve got us this year.”

Despite the radio presenters ‘confirming’ the news, the BBC told Newsquest it would not be commenting on the announcement.

Instead, the broadcaster said “any announcements regarding Eurovision will be made in due course.”

The act and song representing the UK will be publicly announced by the BBC before the European Broadcasting Union (EBU)’s deadline in March 2025, the BBC has said.

The country group have toured the UK and US including stopping at the C2C: Country to Country British music festival, The Long Road festival in Leicestershire, Highways Festival at the Royal Albert Hall, CMA Fest in Nashville, Tennessee and opening for Billy Joel’s 2023 BST Hyde Park show.

Last year, Eurovision was hosted in Malmo, Sweden and the winner was Nemo Mettler from Switzerland.

Tearfully accepting the trophy on stage, Nemo said: “I want to say thank you so much – I hope this contest can live up to its promise and continue to stand for peace and dignity for every person in this world.”

In 2024, UK entrant Olly Alexander didn’t finish dead last with dance-pop track Dizzy but did receive “nul points” from the audience vote.

It was the first time that a British entry performed in the semi-final of the competition and gave the UK a chance to showcase its song twice.

The year before that, pop singer Mae Muller represented the UK and scored 24 points with her track I Wrote A Song when she performed at Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena.

In 2022, Sam Ryder’s Eurovision stint representing the UK saw the singer finish as runner-up in Turin, Italy.

His Eurovision success also helped him achieve a UK number one album, two UK number two singles and Brit and Emmy Award nominations.

Tony Roberts Dies: The Woody Allen Film Actor And Broadway Star Was 85

Tony Roberts, who appeared in six Woody Allen films and had an active career in television and on Broadway, died of lung cancer on Friday. He was 85.

Born David Anthony Roberts in Manhattan on October 22, 1939, he made his Broadway debut at the age of 23 in 1962’s Something About a Soldier. In 1965, he replaced Robert Redford in the original production of Neil Simon’s Barefoot in the Park. Three years later he was nominated for the Tony for Best Actor in a musical for his performance in 1968’s How Now, Dow Jones.

In Annie Hall in 1977, Roberts portrayed Rob, the best friend of Woody Allen’s Alvy Singer. Other Allen movies he appeared in were Radio Days, Stardust Memories, Hannah and Her Sisters and A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy.

Roberts married dancer Jennifer Lyons in 1969. They divorced in 1975. He is survived by his daughter, Nicole.

Wicked’s Cynthia Erivo Doesn’t Hold Back When Responding To Reports That She And Ariana Grande Are Performing At The Oscars

The Oscars are swiftly approaching, with many wondering what exciting surprises this year’s broadcast has in store. Conan O’Brien is hosting, which is a treat for many comedy fans, and his famous on-stage antics will surely liven up the ceremony. Many are also wondering if there will be any performances to look forward to, including one from Wicked’s Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. Now, Erivo is weighing in on the rumor running around that claims the Glinda and Elphaba actresses will sing during the telecast, and she had a pretty blunt take.

Cynthia Erivo, who is a 2025 Oscar nominee this year, made an appearance at the Critics Choice Awards. She was interviewed by Variety on the red carpet, and she was asked if she and the rest of the Wicked cast would be performing at The Academy Awards. She seemed surprised by the notion, and shut down any suspicion that she’d spoken to The Academy regarding a live performance, saying:

I personally am surprised that she was shocked by the rumors. Wicked was a massive box office hit this year, and resulted in a Best Picture Oscar nomination, as well as acting nominations for both Erivo and Grande. It clearly will have a presence at the ceremony, and has left a massive stamp on pop culture. It’s also not unusual for a host to include musical elements in their opening, especially when a big musical is nominated.

However, it seems that Erivo’s confusion comes from the fact that Wicked wasn’t nominated for Best Original Song. She said:

While she is correct that Wicked wasn’t nominated for its songs, it also wasn’t technically eligible considering the music wasn’t originally written for the screen and was written for the stage musical. Also, just because it isn’t nominated for songs, doesn’t mean that the potential wasn’t there. The cast of Les Misérables sang “One Day More” at the Oscars in 2013 despite that song not being nominated due to ineligibility, so a Wicked performance didn’t seem out of the question.

Additionally, the Oscars are mixing up how they handle Best Original Song this year. In the past, all the nominees performed their nominated song at the ceremony. However, The Academy has decided not to do it this year. In context, the decision makes sense — as they’re hoping to use the time to highlight how the songs were crafted. Plus, Ryan Gosling brought the house down with “I’m Just Ken” in 2024, and that’ll be hard to top. Some thought this change in tradition may make room for a potential Wicked performance, but based on these Erivo comments, unfortunately, this likely won’t be the case.

Fans may not see “Defying Gravity” performed at the Oscars, but they can revisit the fantastic music of Wicked, which is still playing in select theaters nationwide. You can also see if the film takes home the gold at the Academy Awards by watching the ceremony live on ABC on March 2nd. The Oscars will also be streaming this year for those with a Hulu subscription.

Zoe Saldana praised her fellow nominees as she accepted the Critics Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress on Friday (02.07.25).

The 46-year-old actress beat off strong competition from Danielle Deadwyler, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Ariana Grande, Margaret Qualley and Isabella Rossellini to take home the award for her work in ‘Emilia Pérez’ at the ceremony at the Barker Hanger in Los Angeles.

She said: “To my fellow nominees, the films this year and the work you’ve all done. It’s breathtaking. I will forever be proud to be among you. Thank you to all of you. I can’t see you, but you f****** rock.”

She also shared that she tries not to pay too much attention to movie critics but added “I will listen to you all tonight and I will accept this with pride”.

“Whenever you receive a negative criticism for a role or a film, everyone says, ‘Don’t read the reviews.’ Then when you get the positive feedback, everyone says, ‘Did you read the reviews?’ But I appreciate the role of a critic. I do sometimes. I sometimes read the reviews and I internalize it, especially the really insightful and helpful feedback, like, ‘Her crying is really distracting. She’s in too many franchises,’ or my personal favorite, ‘She’s too blue.’ So I will listen to you all tonight, and I will accept this with pride. Thank you.

“To think that ‘Emilia Pérez’ has been the little movie that could and has resonated with so many people has been an experience worth having. Thank you to my family, especially my incredible husband and my nephew, who is with me tonight. You made me, me. So thank you, and to my boys, my greatest adventure and my toughest critics. I love you. My wish for the impact of this film on audiences in our world is that I hope we can all be curious and open hearted towards each other, because you never know when you’ll have the opportunity to be a hero, and someone else’s story. So, our world is too big and too beautiful to be any other way so stay curious, stay kind and stay blue, not too blue.

“To the entire cast and crew, the talented artists and designers and musicians, I share this with you.”

‘Emilia Pérez’ also won Best Foreign Language Film and Best Song for ‘El Mal’ for Zoe, Karla Sofía Gascón and Camille.

At the ceremony, hosted by Chelsea Handler, ‘Conclave’ and ‘Wicked’ were up for 11 awards each, while ‘Dune: Part Two’ and ‘Emilia Pérez’ had 10 nominations each.
