    Classic Rock Legend Dies After ‘Short Illness’: The Jam’s Rick Buckler Was 69

    The Jam had 18 consecutive UK top 40 singles and released six studio albums before they split in 1982.

    Rick Buckler, the drummer for the English rock band The Jam, has died. Buckler passed away “peacefully” surrounded by family in Woking, U.K. on Monday, Feb. 17 following an unspecified “short illness,” his family said in a statement, per the BBC. Hiis passing comes just two weeks after he canceled a spoken-word tour due to “ongoing health issues.” He was 69.

    The Jam was formed in 1972 in Woking, with the original lineup featuring Buckler on drums alongside bass player Bruce Foxton and lead singer and guitarist Paul Weller. After releasing their debut album In the City in 1977, the trio went on to become one of the most influential bands in the British punk rock and new wave movements, and charted 18 consecutive U.K. Top 40 singles, including “Town Called Malice,” “Going Underground,” and “Down in the Tube Station at Midnight.” Their song “That’s Entertainment” became one of the U.K.’s top import singles of all time, per Variety.

    The Jam released a total of six albums – In the City (1977), This Is the Modern World (1977), All Mod Cons (1978), Setting Sons (1979), Sound Affects (1980), and The Gift (1982) – before the band split in 1982. Although The Jam never fully reunited, Buckler and Foxton went on to play together as part of the group From The Jam. Buckler also created the band d Time UK with Jimmy Edwards, Ray Simone, Danny Kustow, and bassist Martin Gordon.

    Paying tribute to his former bandmate, Foxton said: “I was shocked and devastated to hear the very sad news today. Rick was a good guy and a great drummer whose innovative drum patterns helped shape our songs. I’m glad we had the chance to work together as much as we did.”

    Weller added in his own tribute: “I’m shocked and saddened by Rick’s passing. I’m thinking back to us all rehearsing in my bedroom in Stanley Road, Woking. To all the pubs and clubs we played at as kids, to eventually making a record. What a journey! We went far beyond our dreams and what we made stands the test of time. My deepest sympathy to all family and friends.”

    Buckler who published his autobiography That’s Entertainment: My Life in the Jam in 2015, is survived by his wife, Lesley, and two children. His family remembered him as a “loving husband, father, and grandfather” who was “devoted to many” and will be “greatly missed.”

    Universal Shifts Untitled Steven Spielberg Event Film Away from ‘Avengers’ and ‘Mandalorian’ Movies

    Universal is shifting its untitled Steven Spielberg event film away from “Avengers: Doomsday” and “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” and straight into the “Scary Movie” reboot’s territory. The untitled Spielberg movie was set for a May 15, 2026 theatrical release; the film will now wait nearly another month, releasing wide on Friday, June 12, 2026.

    The shift is not all about Spielberg, IndieWire has learned.

    The June slot was previously occupied by another untiled Universal event film, that one directed by Daniels Kwan and Scheinert. The Daniels film is now undated, but a new release date will be announced shortly. It has a script, a person with knowledge of the situation told IndieWire, but needs a little more time. Internally, the Spielberg shift is being looked at as a win-win for both (untitled, event) films.

    It’s not like there is no competition set for Spielberg’s new date — it’s just now less of a crossover with potential movie goers. June 12 is the same date the rebooted “Scary Movie” is set to release, and is one week after “Masters of the Universe.” The Spielberg pic will get a one-week head start on “Toy Story 5.” All in all, it is a less-competitive slot.

    Universal’s original event film created and directed by Spielberg will star Josh O’Connor (“Challengers,” “The Crown”), Emily Blunt (“Oppenheimer,” “A Quiet Place”), Colman Domingo (“Sing Sing,” “Rustin”), Colin Firth (“The King’s Speech,” “Kingsman” franchise), and Eve Hewson (“Bad Sisters,” “The Perfect Couple”). Kristie Macosko Krieger will produce for Amblin Entertainment.

    Based on a story by Spielberg, the screenplay is by David Koepp, who wrote the script for “Jurassic Park,” “The Lost World: Jurassic Park,” “War of the Worlds,” and “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.” So yeah, they’ve worked together before. Koepp also wrote the script for the upcoming “Jurassic World Rebirth.”

    In April 2024, Variety reported that Spielberg’s next project will “likely” be “a UFO film based on his own original idea” and written by Koepp. Sounds like an event film to us.

    Then again, pretty much any Spielberg film is an event film — for cinephiles, at the very least. Spielberg is the top-grossing director of all time and a three-time Oscar winner: Best Director and Best Picture for “Schindler’s List,” and Best Director for “Saving Private Ryan.”

    In 2022, IndieWire (and others) reported that Spielberg was working on a Frank Bullitt biopic. Bradley Cooper was later set to star as Bullitt, the character made famous from the 1968 Steve McQueen thriller. That one was set at Warner Bros. with Spielberg slated to direct from a screenplay by “Spotlight” Oscar winner Josh Singer. It was intended to be a completely original story and not a remake of the original “Bullitt” movie by Peter Yates. Cooper and Spielberg were set to produce with Kristie Macosko Krieger; the same trio produced Netflix’s “Maestro.” McQueen’s son Chad and his granddaughter Molly were named as executive producers on Spielberg’s “Bullitt.”

    NEW YORK (AP) — Bertha Hope was only three years old when she started playing Brahms’ “Lullaby” on the piano just from hearing it on the radio.

    “How did you do that?” asked her shocked parents, both entertainers. “That’s when they really started paying attention to the fact that I had some talent that needed to be nurtured,” recalled Hope, who has used that talent to become a jazz pianist, composer and bandleader for decades.

    Though Hope, now 88, has toured extensively, recorded several albums and helped support the legacy of her late husband, the jazz pianist Elmo Hope, her talent still needs nurturing. And a new initiative dedicated to the preservation of jazz and the artists who helped build it plans to provide support for Hope and dozens of others.

    The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and The Jazz Foundation of America on Tuesday announced the Jazz Legacies Fellowship — a new $15 million program that will give 50 artists who are 62 years or older a lifetime achievement award that includes a $100,000 unrestricted grant, professional support and performance opportunities.

    “It’s an incredible and very humbling honor,” said Hope, who is part of the program’s inaugural class of 20 fellows. “It will change my life forever.”

    Like so many jazz artists, Hope has amassed influence and accolades, but not the millions that stars in other musical genres enjoy. In order to make ends meet, most jazz musicians must tour and teach more than they would like.

    Hope says the grant will supplement her income enough to spend some time digging through recordings made at New York’s Boogie Woogie Studio, owned and operated by her second husband, jazz bassist Walter Becker, best known for his time in the bands of Sarah Vaughan and Cannonball Adderley.

    “They’ve been in my closet for so long,” said Hope, who was proud that Boogie Woogie would let young musicians record there for free. “I would like to see if they’re worth saving.”

    That kind of artistic work supporting both the history and future of jazz is exactly what organizers of the Jazz Legacies Fellowship hoped it would create.

    “Jazz is such an extraordinary and quintessentially American art form,” Elizabeth Alexander, president of The Mellon Foundation, told The Associated Press. “People who are playing at the highest levels today, they can trace their genealogy right back to the people who began the art form… So we thought that jazz was at this point where, especially for its elders and its history, there was a lot that we wanted to be able to protect and support. This was the time to do it.”

    The Jazz Legacies Fellowship is part of a $35 million commitment to the genre from the Mellon Foundation, the largest philanthropic supporter of the arts in the United States. The foundation plans to donate to the Ellis Marsalis Center in New Orleans, the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance/Belongo in New York, and The Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival, among other organizations.

    Jazz pianist Jason Moran – who helped design the fellowship with foundation officials and other musicians, including Terri Lyne Carrington, Christian McBride, Arturo O’Farrill, and Esperanza Spalding – said that like so many in the genre he learned from his elders. And that education often extended beyond music and the stage, though not everyone had been as lucky as him.

    “What I wished for these royal beings was more of the kind of support that I feel they have offered the world, especially the musical world,” Moran said. “I think one of the fortunate things is that we have a generation still performing the music that is still a part of this first wave. They created the language that many of us younger musicians have just accepted and kind of pulled into our own.”

    Joe Petrucelli, executive director of the Jazz Foundation of America, which will administer the fellowship, said it was meant to provide a bit of security in an “unsteady and unpredictable” profession.

    “There’s no retirement plan,” he said. “There’s inadequate health coverage for so many. The life is just a precarious one… We want to make life easier however we can.”

    Petrucelli said organizers were excited to specifically help Hope, calling her plans for the fellowship “the best-case outcome.”

    “There is this idea of her as this figure of endurance and inspiration,” he said of Hope. “There’s so much affection around her and so much respect and love for her. It certainly makes sense that she’s received this honor.”

    Hope says the fellowship validates the work that she has shared with the world and that others have seen value in it.

    But she is more pleased to be seen as part of jazz.
