Jennifer Lopez tears up at ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’ premiere, calls it ‘dream come true’

Sooner or later, Jennifer Lopez was certain to get the chance to star in a movie musical.

At last, she has, starring as the titular Spider Woman (and Ingrid Luna/Aurora) in Bill Condon’s new film adaptation of the Tony-winning musical, Kiss of the Spider Woman. For Lopez, who takes on the role originated by Chita Rivera, it’s a dream come true.

“I’ve been waiting for this moment my whole life,” Lopez said at the film’s premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. “The truth is, when you talk about being in musicals the reason that I even wanted to be in this business was because my mom would sit me in front of the TV, [West Side Story] would come on once a year, on Thanksgiving, I remember. And I was just mesmerized, and I was like, ‘That’s what I want to do.’”

“That was always my goal,” she continued, fighting back tears. “And this is the first time I actually got to do it, so it’s a big deal. [Bill Condon] made my dream come true. I think of Chita Rivera, I think of Fred Ebb, I think of Terrence McNally and all of the love that they poured into this, and it’s just an honor to be able to be part of this movie.”

Directed by Bill Condon, the new film is based on the 1992 stage musical from Terrence McNally, which was itself based on the 1985 film by Héctor Babenco, which was again based on the 1976 novel by the Argentine author Manuel Puig. Condon adapted the Tony-winning musical, which features a score by John Kander and Fred Ebb, the team who wrote Chicago and Cabaret.

Set in 1983 during Argentina’s Dirty War, Kiss of the Spider Woman tells the story of Molina (Tonatiuh), a gay window dresser who has been sentenced to eight years in prison for indecency after being caught with another man. During the third year of his sentence, he’s placed in a cell with Valentin (Diego Luna), a revolutionary who is vital to the fight against Argentina’s military dictatorship. Molina copes with prison by imagining the plot of his favorite film, Kiss of the Spider Woman, starring Old Hollywood actress Ingrid Luna (Lopez). Eventually, Valentin also finds escape in Molina’s description of the fictional classic musical, which comes to life on screen in vivid Technicolor musical numbers.

Lopez said she sees the film as both a fantastical musical and a potent message for our times. “The aspect of doing that ’50s musical is a fantasy, it’s the escapism,” she noted. “The thing I love about the movie the most is it tells of the importance of storytelling and how it can help you get through the day. And how it helps all of us. Films help all of us get through the hardest times in our lives just likes music. That’s why movies are so important.”

Condon also spoke to the film’s relevance, even reading a piece of Donald Trump’s inauguration speech stating that the U.S. government only recognizes two genders in his introduction prior to the film. “It had been clear already that for years that trans people were being used as the latest victims of the culture war,” he reflected later during the post-screening Q&A. “It feels as if no matter what happened [with the election], this is something that we have to live with, and it’s not going to go away. To me, the promise of the movie is that somehow people can grow beyond that and see each other as individuals.”

Earlier on Sunday, at the Los Angeles Times Talks @ Sundance Film Festival, Lopez explained that her first introduction to the story was via Condon’s script. “I was like, ‘Oh my God,’” she said. “I remember sitting in bed and reading it and going, ‘Oh my God, is this real?’ And I remember calling my agent back and I was going, ‘This is mine.’”

She added that she had never before “felt in my life that I was born to play a part ever.”

The Bronx-born singer and actress, 55, has been touring the world performing her pop hits like “Jenny From the Block” and “Waiting for Tonight” for the better part of three decades. She’s been acting even longer, making her big screen debut in 1993 and starring in action, romance, and comedy classics including Maid in Manhattan and Out of Sight.

But she noted that Spider Woman represents the first time she’s ever been approached to star in a movie musical. “I did Selena years ago, but it was not my voice,” she said of the 1997 biopic of slain Tejano sensation Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, which turned her into a star. “They wanted to use her voice. I did dance a little, but there wasn’t much choreography. So this was my first musical.”

She also enthused about Condon’s direction of the theatrical aspects of the film. “You were also very upfront about the fact that you wanted to do it like a traditional musical from the ’40s and ’50s, where they would do the whole number in one shot, sing it and dance it all the way through,” she said. “He was like, ‘One of the reasons I want to do is I know you can do that.’ And I was like, ‘Well, there’s 10 numbers in the movie that we’re going to do in three weeks. He was like, ‘I think you can do it.’ It’s like, ‘Okay, well then how can I let him down?’”

Lopez added that she was “so moved by the story between Valentin and Molina in it, and I just felt it was so relevant today for this generation.”

Condon also spoke about changes he made in the story and why he felt them necessary. “In this version [we are] going to tell it as a love story,” he said at the LA Times Talks. “So he, from the first scene is layering in things that allow the audience to believe that this character takes a journey toward love.”

Lopez concurred, adding, “There’s so much adversity in the community that it was important to show that love is just love and people are just people.”

After the premiere, Tonatiuh echoed these sentiments, noting the effect the role had on his own life. “Growing up, [I was] a femme queer Latin kid in a culture that doesn’t necessarily praise those things,” he said. “I remember when I was really young I fought tooth and nail to be super feminine and put it in people’s faces, but I was told my career would never achieve to the lengths that I wanted to because of it.”

“The thing I fought so much to love about myself got stamped out of me in an industry that didn’t know how to handle duality,” he concluded. “When I got this material, I knew this person, spiritually. I understood as someone who felt like the loser of their own life who found themselves to be the hero of their own story by falling in love. No one can tell you who you are, you get to decide that. In a time when people tell us things are inherently binary, I hope people might see this and know that they are not alone.

  • Alec, Hilaria Baldwin’s Reality Show Immediately Addresses ‘Rust’ Shooting

Alec, Hilaria Baldwin’s Reality Show Immediately Addresses ‘Rust’ Shooting

Alec Baldwin and Hilaria Baldwin — and their seven kids — are at the center of their TLC reality series, but the couple found a way to immediately pay tribute to Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins after her death.

The official trailer for The Baldwins, which was released by TLC on Monday, January 27, started off with Hilaria, 44, teasing their dynamic at home, saying, “Seven children, six animals and two parents. A wild family.”

Seconds into the sneak peek, the mood became somber as Hilaria acknowledged the Rust shooting. “A son lost his mom in the most unthinkable tragedy,” she added. “This is never something to forget and we are trying to parent through it.”

Alec, 66, for his part, was seen getting visibly emotional in multiple clips.

“Honestly from the bottom of my soul, I don’t know where I would be if I didn’t have you and these kids,” he said before Hilaria said in a voiceover, “We have had bad moments but we found our foundation. We are solid and we are here together.”

The Baldwins premieres on Sunday, February 23, on TLC and it comes two years after Alec was charged with involuntary manslaughter in January 2023 following Hutchins’ death on set. Alec was holding the prop gun that was fired on the movie set in October 2021, which killed 42-year-old Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza, but has insisted he’s not responsible for the incident.

Alec pleaded not guilty, and the charges were dropped in April 2023, but the actor was indicted again in connection with the death of Hutchins. The second case was ultimately dismissed by the judge and Baldwin has since filed a lawsuit accusing the prosecution team of malicious prosecution and civil rights violations.

TLC’s reality series offers viewers a behind-the-scenes look at Alec and Hilaria’s life. The couple share seven kids: Carmen Gabriela, 11, Rafael Thomas, 9, Leonardo Ángel Charles, 8, Romeo Alejandro David, 6, Eduardo “Edu” Pao Lucas, María Lucía Victoria, 4, and Ilaria Catalina Irena, 2. Alec also shares daughter Ireland, 29, with ex-wife Kim Basinger.

According to a press release, The Baldwins “blends the highs and lows of family life, with the challenges and humor that come while raising a large family in the public eye.”

The series premiere documents Alec and Hilaria celebrating their oldest son’s birthday by heading to East Hampton. However, Alec and Hilaria must navigate the “emotional complexities” ahead of his trial as they attempt to keep their children’s lives “as stable as possible.”

“This series gives viewers a glimpse into our lives as a family — the good, bad, wild, and everything in between. We hope viewers will connect with our experiences and the love we share,” Alec and Hilaria said in a statement. “Filming the show has been an amazing journey, and we’re proud to have TLC as a partner in telling our story.”

The Baldwins promises to feature “hilarious moments around the dinner table to candid discussions about mental health and their ever-evolving parenting style, the series shows what life is really like for the Baldwins — chaotic, funny, exhausting, and filled with love,” according to the synopsis.

The synopsis continues: “Alec and Hilaria’s dynamic as a couple will also take center stage, with moments that showcase their deep partnership as they navigate challenges hand in hand. With seven children in tow the Baldwin household is never short on activity, but through it all, Alec and Hilaria embrace the madness with an infectious energy, showing viewers the beauty of raising a family that’s anything but ordinary.”

Selena Gomez posts, quickly deletes video crying about Trump’s ICE deportations and displaying Mexican flag

Chicago resident Cata Truss joined ‘America’s Newsroom’ to discuss her reaction to the targeted ICE raids in the Windy City and Mayor Brandon Johnson’s pushback against the Trump administration’s crackdown.

Actress and singer Selena Gomez shared and then deleted a video of her crying about ICE deportations and expressing her wish she could “do something.”

Over the first weekend of President Donald Trump’s second term, federal agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and their partners conducted nationwide roundups of more than 1,200 illegal immigrants who were charged or convicted with committing crimes on American soil.

The American-born “Only Murders in the Building” star posted a video to her Instagram story with a caption of “I’m sorry” along with a Mexican flag emoji.

MSNBC ANCHOR CORRECTS HER CORRESPONDENT ON-AIR: THEY’RE ‘UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS’

“All my people are getting attacked, the children. I don’t understand,” she said while crying. “I’m so sorry, I wish I could do something, but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise.”

She deleted the video shortly afterward, and according to a purported screenshot, posted another, now-deleted Instagram story simply with a caption saying, “Apparently it’s not okay to show empathy for people.”

The video was widely mocked across social media, such as by talk show host Piers Morgan, who wrote, “Posting yourself weeping over illegal immigrant criminals being deported is a new level of absurd celebrity narcissism.”

The actress has spoken about illegal immigration before, and executive produced a Netflix documentary series about illegal immigrants called “Living Undocumented.”

In a 2019 Time Magazine interview, Gomez spoke about how illegal immigration helped shape her own family’s story.

“In the 1970s, my aunt crossed the border from Mexico to the United States hidden in the back of a truck,” she said. “My grandparents followed, and my father was born in Texas soon after. In 1992, I was born a U.S. citizen thanks to their bravery and sacrifice.”

She later told the outlet, “Over the past four decades, members of my family have worked hard to gain United States citizenship. Undocumented immigration is an issue I think about every day, and I never forget how blessed I am to have been born in this country thanks to my family and the grace of circumstance. But when I read the news headlines or see debates about immigration rage on social media, I feel afraid for those in similar situations. I feel afraid for my country.”

  • Democratic Party Scandal: Child Abuse Charges Rock Florida Politics!

Democratic Party Scandal: Child Abuse Charges Rock Florida Politics!

In a chilling development that has sent shockwaves through political and community spheres, a Florida Democratic Party official, Matthew Inman, finds himself at the center of an appalling scandal involving child sex abuse material. Authorities have charged Inman, 39, who served as the Orange County Democratic Party treasurer and was deeply entrenched in two local Democratic organizations, with the transportation of child sex abuse material.

The official complaint brought against Inman outlines a disturbing timeline — between August and October of the previous year, he reportedly received and saved several videos depicting the egregious sexual abuse of children on his cellphone. The case took a darker turn when, in October 2024, Inman traveled to Las Vegas. Here, he is said to have engaged in an online conversation with an undercover law enforcement officer who masqueraded as the father of a fictional nine-year-old boy. Prosecutors allege that Inman expressed an unsettling interest in meeting and sexually assaulting this purported child and went further by sending child sexual abuse material during these exchanges.

As authorities moved to execute a search warrant at Inman’s residence, the Orlando-based party official attempted a futile act of concealment. According to officials, he tried to delete incriminating evidence from his phone and managed to hide in his attic — a desperate attempt to evade justice. This action followed the modus operandi of high-profile operations such as “Project Safe Childhood,” an initiative launched by the Department of Justice to combat child exploitation since 2006.

The revelations surrounding Inman’s arrest have left political entities reeling. The Orange County Democratic Party acted swiftly. In a statement, they declared, “We are deeply appalled and horrified by the news that Matthew Inman has been arrested on charges of sexual abuse involving a minor.” They added, “We unequivocally condemn child sexual abuse in the strongest possible terms and hope that any victims involved receive the support and resources they need moving forward.” The party officials underscored their commitment to maintaining “the highest standards of accountability and integrity” by suspending Inman from all his roles.

Equally shocked was the “Rainbow Democrats,” a nonprofit group helmed by Inman that aims to promote goodwill among the LGBTQIA+ community within the Democratic Party. The group expressed deep dismay at the allegations, stating, “We offer our condolences to any victims of child sexual abuse and hope justice will be served to the fullest extent of the law.” Inman is currently suspended from his position within the nonprofit.

The arrest of a Democratic Party official on such grave charges has stirred discussions far beyond the confines of Florida politics. It acts as a stark reminder of the pressing need for vigilance in safeguarding the most vulnerable in our society — our children. The law’s full weight will fall upon Inman, who faces a potential sentence ranging from a minimum of five years to a maximum of 20 years in federal prison if convicted.

Inman’s fall from grace — once a delegate and proud member of the Democratic National Convention and an active voice against opposing political ideologies — underscores a broader societal issue. Authorities and communities alike must remain relentless in their pursuit of justice for victims of such heinous crimes while ensuring robust protective measures are in place. As this case unfolds, it will certainly invoke a reexamination of the values and ethical standards that guide political and community leaders today.

Top Democrat Caught in Child Porn Scandal: Party Scrambles to Distance Itself!

In a disturbing turn of events, Matthew Inman, a notable figure within the Florida Democratic Party, finds himself embroiled in a scandal of grave proportions. The 39-year-old, who served as the Orange County Democratic Party treasurer and presided over the Rainbow Democrats, was apprehended following allegations of possessing and disseminating child pornography. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida announced these charges, which encompass the transportation of child sex abuse material.

The alleged offenses came to light during a meticulous undercover sting operation staged by law enforcement. Between August and October 2024, Inman purportedly amassed and secured several videos on his phone depicting the heinous abuse of children. His illicit activities extended beyond mere possession — Inman reportedly engaged in conversations with an undercover officer posing as the father of a fictitious nine-year-old boy. During these exchanges, he allegedly expressed intentions to commit further unspeakable acts, sending additional illicit material as a chilling gesture of interest.

As the veil of secrecy lifted, the FBI executed a search warrant at Inman’s residence. In a futile attempt to evade culpability, Inman allegedly endeavored to erase the incriminating evidence from his phone and sought refuge in his attic. This desperate maneuver, however, did little to shield him from the legal repercussions that now await.

The associations and organizations once championed by Inman have swiftly distanced themselves. The Rainbow Democrats, a nonprofit championing LGBTQ+ causes, expressed their shock and dismay. “We offer our condolences to any victims of child sexual abuse and hope justice will be served to the fullest extent of the law,” read a statement from the group, which has since suspended Inman from his leadership role. A similar sentiment reverberated from the Orange County Democratic Party, which responded with a statement of unequivocal condemnation for child sexual abuse and has stripped Inman of his duties.

Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative by the Department of Justice aimed at combating child sexual exploitation, underscores the gravity of the charges against Inman. If convicted, he faces a potential sentence of up to 20 years in federal prison. The scandal strikes a troubling chord, raising inevitable questions about accountability, trust, and the moral obligations of those who represent the public in various capacities.

As the judicial process unfolds, one thing remains clear: the justice system must serve as an unwavering pillar of accountability, ensuring that those who exploit the most vulnerable among us are made to answer for their actions. The community’s collective outrage and the swift institutional responses underscore a resolute stance against such insidious behavior, echoing a broader societal mandate to safeguard the innocent — even as we grapple with the unsettling revelations from within.

‘The White Lotus’ Season 3 Trailer: Carrie Coon Has a Breakdown on the Beach

What is a vacation without an existential crisis?

“The White Lotus” is back for Season 3 with tears, sex, death (another murder, perhaps?), and all. The star-studded anthology series stars Leslie Bibb, Carrie Coon, Walton Goggins, Michelle Monaghan, Parker Posey, and returning actress Natasha Rothwell.

The ensemble also includes Patrick Schwarzenegger, Sam Nivola, Lek Patravadi, Sarah Catherine Hook, Jason Isaacs, Lalisa Manobal, Tayme Thapthimthong, Aimee Lou Wood, Nicholas Duvernay, Arnas Fedaravičius, Christian Friedel, Scott Glenn, Dom Hetrakul, Yuri Kolokolnikov, Julian Kostov, Charlotte Le Bon, Morgana O’Reilly, and Shalini Peiris.

The eight-episode third season hails from showrunner Mike White. The official logline reads: “The social satire is set at an exclusive Thai resort and follows the exploits of various guests and employees over the span of a week.”

Season 3 is created, written, and directed by White, who also is executive producing alongside David Bernad and Mark Kamine.

The Thai setting for Season 3 was due to White being wooed by a $4.4 million tax rebate, according to Japanese producer Georgina Pope.

“The White Lotus” creator White previously told Entertainment Weekly that the season will be a “supersized ‘White Lotus.’ It’s going to be longer, bigger, crazier. I don’t know what people will think, but I am super excited, so at least for my own barometer, that’s a good thing.”

The third installment will focus on “death and Eastern religion and spirituality,” as White previously shared during a post-finale Season 2 featurette. “The first season kind of highlighted money, and then the second season is sex,” White said. “I think the third season would be maybe a satirical and funny look at death and Eastern religion and spirituality. It feels like it could be a rich tapestry to do another round at White Lotus.”

The first season, which premiered July 2021, was set in Hawaii and received 20 Emmy nominations across 13 categories and ten wins, the most wins of any program that year including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series. The second season, which premiered in December 2022, was set in Sicily and garnered 23 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series, and five wins.

“The White Lotus” is already renewed for Season 4.

“The White Lotus” Season 3 premieres Sunday, February 16 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and will be available to stream on Max. Check out the trailer below.

As you know, J Lo attended the screening with director Bill Condon, costar Tonatiuh and others. She posed for paparazzi photos on the red carpet before heading into the theater to watch the film, which was produced by J Lo, her ex-husband Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.

The movie is about a gay hairdresser, Luis Molina, who’s imprisoned for 8 years for corrupting a minor in 1980s Argentina. Molina creates a fantasy woman in his mind named Aurora, played by J Lo, to escape the horrors of prison.

Thailand Is the Ultimate Keeper of Secrets in ‘The White Lotus’ Season Three Trailer

Former ‘Vibe’ Editor Recalls Sean Combs Death Threat in Docuseries Preview

If the walls at the resort housing the morally-grey and naively-misguided stars of The White Lotus could talk, they’d have plenty of secrets to spill. In the trailer for Season Three, premiering Feb. 16 on HBO, a Thailand getaway reveals chaos and corruption for guests and employees, alike.

“Everyone comes to Thailand, they’re either hiding from someone or they’re looking for someone,” the resort health mentor Mook (played by Blackpink’s Lisa) says in the clip. But at the White Lotus, in particular, those worries should melt away. “Our hotel is the best in the world,” another crew member adds. “At the end of the week, you will be an entirely different person.”

It comes across as more of a threat than an ode to relaxation. For Timothy Ratliff (Jason Isaacs), who’s there on vacation with wife Victoria (Parker Posey) and three kids, the transformation comes early when he gets a call with some bad news. “What am I supposed to tell my family?” he asks. “We’re poor now and daddy’s going to prison.” Victoria might not say out loud that she’s in the marriage for the money, but when asked what she would think if they lost everything she deadpans: “Honestly, I don’t know if I’d want to live.” For some others on The White Lotus, living or dying might now be their own choice.

There are also murmurings about an increase in crime rates, as evidenced by masked gunmen battling with employees who vowed to protect the hotel. Spa manager Belinda Lindsey (Natasha Rothwell) is miles away from her usual resort in Maui, but she’s seen enough to know something here doesn’t feel right. A group of vacationing girlfriends deploy the saying “What happens in Thailand stays in Thailand” to justify their bad behavior, while a young woman hanging with an older man makes note of the anger rich men seem to carry with them. The sinister air of the location is unlikely to leave them all unscathed.

The White Lotus Season Three stars Leslie Bibb, Carrie Coon, Walton Goggins, Sarah Catherine Hook, Isaacs, Lisa, Michelle Monaghan, Sam Nivola, Lek Patravadi, Posey, Rothwell, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Tayme Thapthimthong, and Aimee Lou Wood. It also features appearances from Nicholas Duvernay, Arnas Fedaravičius, Christian Friedel, Scott Glenn, Dom Hetrakul, Yuri Kolokolnikov, Julian Kostov, Charlotte Le Bon, Morgana O’Reilly, and Shalini Peiris.
