Novocaine Review: Finally, Jack Quaid Becomes A Proper Leading Man In This Hilarious, Thrilling Action Movie I Didn’t Want To End

With John Wick perhaps gone for good (at least if Keanu Reeves has anything to say about it), we are now in the era of unexpected action stars. We’ve seen Bob Odenkirk and Ke Huy Quan take their affable, everyman personas and become action powerhouses (in 2021’s Nobody and this year’s Love Hurts, respectively). While we still have the go-to traditional action stars of today — hi, Jason Statham! — there’s a new area of opportunity to mine. Welcome to the club, Novocaine.

Jack Quaid, fresh off another genre-mixing movie (the sci-fi/horror flick Companion), brings his boy-next-door charm to the role of Nathan Caine, an anxious assistant manager at a bank who seems to live a fairly dull and dreary life. We first meet him glumly going about his morning routine while R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts” plays, effectively setting the tone for Nate’s current emotional state. He has a neurological disorder that prevents him from feeling any kind of pain, or things like hot and cold. Seems like a dream, but as Nate soon reveals, it’s led to him adopting a very solitary existence.

As often happens in movies, everything changes when love enters the picture. For months, Nate’s been pining after Sherry (Amber Midthunder), a co-worker at his bank, and a spilled coffee pot leads to them going on a lunch date that turns into possibly the best night of Nate’s life. Suddenly, he’s got a sunny outlook on life and pushing the boundaries of his disorder. And then, Sherry’s taken hostage by a trio of violent bank robbers.

Jack Quaid Lets Loose In Novocaine And He Absolutely Kills It

Directors Dan Berk and Robert Olsen take great care to show us how careful Nate is when it comes to his disorder. Every sharp edge in his home and office has a tennis ball covering it, and he refrains from eating solid food out of fear he’ll accidentally bite his tongue off without knowing. He’s spent his life being overly cautious, but it takes one evening with Sherry for him to put everything he knows aside. When she’s hauled off by the goons led by Ray Nicholson’s Simon, Nate doesn’t hesitate for too long before stealing a cop car and chasing after them.

This abrupt turn would feel very jarring and unrealistic in potentially any other movie. However, Berk and Olsen have given Novocaine a giddy, heightened energy that makes all the absurdities of the plot fall away. Nate’s on quite the journey, and we’re all too happy to go along with him. It helps that Quaid and Midthunder have a sweet chemistry, and that Nate and Sherry’s initial date works to deepen both their characters; we can understand why Nate would be so eager to go after her, even at the risk of his own life.

A lot of the credit for that goes to Quaid, who fully cements himself as a leading man by deftly intertwining Nate’s polite, awkward demeanor with his growing determination to save Sherry at all costs.

Due to his inability to feel any pain, Nate has a major advantage. A gun falls into a vat of boiling oil? No problem, he can grab it while the bad guy he’s fighting will back off. Leg suddenly impaled by an arrow? Whatever, he’ll just shuffle awkwardly around until he can get it out. It makes for a unique action-movie hook, and Novocaine plays it up to its highest potential. This is true when it comes to both humor and stakes. With the latter, the movie doesn’t forget that no pain doesn’t mean Nate’s invincible.

As for the humor, I had some concerns the Novocaine trailer had revealed the funniest moments and ruined some of the charm of Quaid’s performance. Thankfully, that isn’t the case, making for a genuinely hilarious movie that had the audience in my theater positively cackling. A lot of the credit for that goes to Quaid, who fully cements himself as a leading man by deftly intertwining Nate’s polite, awkward demeanor with his growing determination to save Sherry at all costs. His comedic timing is on point the whole time.

Add In A Great Supporting Cast & Novocaine Is A Winner Not Even A Few Bumps Can Change That

Novocaine really is Quaid’s show, but every supporting star gets a chance to shine. Midthunder, already an action star of her own thanks to Prey, reaffirms she is far from a damsel in distress and makes Sherry’s resilience — for better or worse — her defining feature, elevating a role that could’ve been underwritten. Jacob Batalon, though again playing sidekick to a nerdy hero after his time in the MCU’s Spider-Man movies, emphasizes his strength as a comedic actor.

Bong has crafted a large-scale genre film that, for all its oddness, goes down pretty easy. But Mickey 17 still manages to have a lot on its mind.

Even the two detectives hunting down Nate make an impression, even though they could’ve fit very awkwardly into the plot. With just a few scenes and some excellent one-liners, Matt Walsh and Betty Gabriel up the humor and the emotional stakes. Novocaine’s well-rounded ensemble only serves to elevate the material even more. A fair bit of the plot and action scenes rest solely on the hook of Nate not feeling any pain, but the execution of this premise is so much fun that I don’t see the point in trying to poke major holes in it.

Screenwriter Lars Jacobson has some additional surprises in store, but I won’t dare spoil them here. Suffice to say, Novocaine takes you on a rollicking adventure that, once it begins after Sherry’s abduction, doesn’t really let up. Sure, there’s some tonal awkwardness with the actual bank heist scene — it’s far more distressing than anything else in the movie — but between the humor and Quaid’s performance, there’s so much fun to be had here that it’s easy to just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Novocaine is 110 minutes long and rated R for strong bloody violence, grisly images, and language throughout.

  • Anna Kendrick offers a 3-word response to working with Blake Lively again

Anna Kendrick offers a 3-word response to working with Blake Lively again

Kendrick and Lively reunited to film their new movie, “Another Simple Favor.”

Anna Kendrick is seemingly avoiding all questions about Blake Lively on her “Another Simple Favor” press tour.

While greeting fans at the world premiere of her film at SXSW in Austin, Texas, Kendrick was asked by Entertainment Tonight about her relationship with Lively.

“Anna, what does it mean to be working with Blake again?” the reporter asked.

While walking by the journalist to take a picture with a fan, Kendrick replied, “Oh, you know.”

Online, fans said they were living for the moment and they understood what Kendrick meant when she said “Oh, you know.”

At the event, Lively was also asked the same question by an Entertainment Tonight reporter and she had quite a different response, “It’s the best! I’m so happy to be here.”

For the past couple of months, Lively has been making headlines for a slew of lawsuits that she and Baldoni have filed against each other, which all started from them working together on “It Ends With Us.”

At the world premiere of “Another Simple Favor,” Kendrick was also asked how she “feels about the movie being impacted by everything that’s going on in the world” by a Variety reporter. The actor seemingly brushed off the question by playing coy.

“Why, what happened?,” she asked. “I did ayahuasca (a plant-based psychedelic), and the last year of my life is just gone, but I heard the movie is amazing.”

“Another Simple Favor” reteams Kendrick as Stephanie Smothers and Lively as Emily Nelson. The two women, who were bonded by murder in “A Simple Favor” are reunited in the sequel once Emily gets out of jail and persuades Stephanie to act as her maid of honor in her wedding to a rich Italian businessman.

The film’s director Paul Feig spoke to People about the movie and said he had “too much fun” working with Lively and Kendrick.

“I mean, I had such a great experience on the first one. It always kind of stuck with me. God, I love working with the two of them, as well as the rest of the cast,” he said.

Emily Osment files for divorce after about 5 months of marriage to Jack Anthony

Georgie (Montana Jordan) shows his bedroom winning ways with wife Mandy (Emily Osment) in an exclusive “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage” scene.

“Hannah Montana” alum Emily Osment is splitting from her husband Jack Anthony after five months of marriage.

Through a statement provided by her reps to USA TODAY on Friday, Osment addressed the split with Anthony, whose legal name is Jack Farina.

“I think with any big decision in your life, whether it’s relationships or work or whatever it may be, you have to firmly plant both feet in that decision. Ultimately, it didn’t work out,” Osment said. Osment filed for divorce on Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court nearly five months after they tied the knot on Oct. 12. The filing states the pair separated on Dec. 7.

According to People and E!, Osment shared a heartfelt, now-deleted Instagram post in June 2023, calling herself “deliriously happy” and flaunting a diamond engagement ring.

“I did not know life could be this sweet,” the actress captioned the post. “I am so proud of the life we have built together and the people we have become over the last few years.”

“This love is so big and so uniquely ours and I know it can do anything,” the “Young Sheldon” star added. “I am so honored to stand next to you every day. I love you, Jack.”

“I cannot wait to be married,” the “Young & Hungry” star told People. “I wish we could just jump to that.”

“It’s so exciting, and we have to constantly remind ourselves, you’re only going to do this once,” Osment said. “So you might look at 1000 pictures of what looks like the exact same chair, and your wedding planner will say, ‘What kind of chairs do you want?’ And I’ll say, ‘Yes, there should be chairs there.’ And she’ll say, ‘No, but what kind of chairs?’ And I’ll say, ‘I don’t care. There should just be chairs.’ It’s a little bit like that.”

“A lot of very small decisions that don’t seem to matter, but on the day, you’re going to be so happy that you sat down and went through the tough decision making,” Osment added. “Because at the end of the day, you get to be married, and that’s the greatest thing ever.”

Huge movie star to replace Dame Maggie Smith in brand new Harry Potter series

A top Netflix actress is rumoured to be in discussions to replace the late Dame Maggie Smith as Professor McGonagall in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series.

Janet McTeer, an Oscar and Emmy-nominated actress, could be the new face of the beloved Hogwarts deputy headmistress, according to Deadline. The 63 year old actress is best known for her role in the 2000 comedy Tumbleweed and as attorney Helen Piece in the popular TV show Ozark. Meanwhile, Paapa Essiedu is reportedly finalising his deal to play Severus Snape, originally portrayed by Alan Rickman.

The 34 year old actor has been involved in projects such as The Lazarus Project and Gangs Of London. HBO recently stated: “We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumour and speculation. As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalise deals.”

John Lithgow is currently the only confirmed cast member, announcing he will be playing Albus Dumbledore in the HBO series. The 79 year old actor expressed surprise at being chosen to fill the shoes of the magical headmaster, a role first played by Richard Harris and Michael Gambon.

“It’s a new chapter of my life. I’m afraid,” he confessed, “But I’m very excited. Some wonderful people are turning their attention back to Harry Potter. That’s why it’s been such a hard decision. I’ll be about 87 years old at the wrap party, but I’ve said yes.”

Dumbledore, the fictional headmaster of Hogwarts and a mentor to Harry Potter, is one of the most cherished characters among fans of Rowling’s original books and the film series. However, not all die-hard fans were thrilled with his casting, arguing that a British actor should have landed the role, not an American, as per the original films.

On X, fans expressed their disappointment: “I can’t understand why John Lithgow is the new Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter HBO series. Dumbledore is British, Lithgow is from the USA.” Another said: “Nothing against John Lithgow, but Dumbledore and the whole Harry Potter franchise is British.”

A third commented: “I love John Lithgow. Absolutely bananas they’re not hiring a British actor to play Dumbledore.” A fourth chimed in: “WarnerBros quite literally need to pull something out of their hat to save Harry Potter. John Lithgow as Dumbledore certainly feels like it’s going to put a lot of people off wanting to watch it. Whatever happened to keeping it all British?”

The new Harry Potter television series promises a deeper exploration of the wizarding world and could run for up to 10 years.

  • We Know How Gene Hackman and His Wife Died

We Know How Gene Hackman and His Wife Died

Actor Gene Hackman was found dead at his home on February 18. He was 95. His wife, Betsy Arakawa, 65, was also dead. Both had been deceased for quite some time as signs of mummification were present. It was initially reported that the couple might have been killed via carbon monoxide poisoning, but that was quickly debunked. No signs of a gas leak were present, the front door was open, and pills were strewn about the residence. It was re-labeled suspicious by authorities.

With the autopsies now complete, the couple deaths were not suspicious. There was no foul play but how they died remains tragic. Mr. Hackman died of heart disease, which isn’t uncommon for a man pushing 100. Betsy’s passing is more startling: she succumbed to hantavirus, a respiratory pathogen spread by rodents. She went out to run errands on February 11 and was never seen again; she likely died that night. Mr. Hackman died a week later (via NYT):

The actor Gene Hackman died from heart disease at his home in New Mexico, most likely a week after his wife, Betsy Arakawa, died from the effects of hantavirus, a disease linked to rodents that can cause respiratory failure in rare cases, the authorities said on Friday.

The revelation that the famous and reclusive couple had died of natural causes put to rest much of the speculation that followed the discovery of their bodies on Feb. 26. But it also raised new questions about the state of mind of Mr. Hackman, who investigators said had advanced Alzheimer’s disease, and why the couple was not discovered sooner.

Ms. Arakawa, 65, had run a series of errands on Feb. 11, but the authorities could find no evidence of any activity after that, suggesting that she could have died that day. Mr. Hackman, 95, is believed to have died about a week later, on Feb. 18, according to New Mexico’s chief medical examiner, Dr. Heather Jarrell.

Mr. Hackman was found on the floor of the mudroom in the couple’s home, near his cane, while Ms. Arakawa was found on a bathroom floor, beside a counter with common medication scattered about that investigators later determined did not play a role in her death. They were not discovered until Feb. 26, when a maintenance worker arrived to the couple’s home east of Santa Fe and grew worried when no one answered the door. The worker contacted a security guard, who called 911.

There are some questions here. Did Mr. Hackman not know his wife was dead for a week? He was in the same home with a dead woman for days before he passed away. Just a sad ending and we’ll likely never get answers to those questions.

Either way, we lost one of the great actors of all-time. 95 years for Mr. Hackman — what a life. As for his wife, 65 is too young to be cut down like that.

  • Novocaine Review – IGN

    Novocaine Review – IGN

Jack Quaid is irresistible as a pathetic man who can take a punch.

Edgar Wright made a name for himself with action comedies like Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World – movies where normal, flawed dudes reluctantly kick ass and get the girl. But it’s been a while since we had a great one of those, so the space was open for directors Dan Berk and Robert Olson – best known for indie films like Significant Other and Villains – to take their own stab at that concept with Novocaine, a gnarly action-comedy romp about a guy with a rare genetic disorder who risks it all to save his one-night stand. Despite its shallow gimmick, Novocaine delivers a sharp script and a fresh take on the hapless hero, as brought to life by the irresistible Jack Quaid of The Boys fame.

Right off the bat, it’s apparent that Nathan Caine (Quaid) isn’t your typical schlubby hero-by-accident. He’s got a great sleep schedule, he drinks green smoothies for breakfast, and, well, he looks like the progeny of Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan. But growing up with CIPA – an often-fatal condition that makes it impossible for Nathan to feel pain or even temperature – has made for a very sheltered life of trying not to accidentally die. It’s a lonely existence, so after his work crush, Sherry (Amber Midthunder), coaxes Nathan out of his shell and into bed, it’s no wonder that he’s willing to put it all on the line to save her from a trio of kidnappers the very next day. After all, he’s on an all-liquid diet for fear of biting off his own tongue, and this is the woman who fed him his first-ever bite of pie.

Nathan might be oblivious to physical harm but he otherwise could not be less suited for hand-to-hand combat, and that contrast is delicious. As he stumbles into vigilante justice he strives – with all the decorum his assistant bank manager job requires – to outrun police detectives, career criminals, and his own mortality. It’s hard not to root for someone who’s down so bad he’ll stick his hand in a deep fryer; someone who pukes in distress after his first kill. It’s not every day you get to see a guy who reeks of having an up-to-date LinkedIn profile learn to fire a stolen gun.

Nathan’s written with care, humor, and specificity – hallmarks of Lars Jacobson’s clever script. There are some guys who are just plain bad, but most characters resist the straightforward morality typical of most action movies. Sherry is an excellent example of that complexity. Though she may be the impetus for Nathan’s spree, she’s no damsel; Nathan, who has recklessly forsaken his Bubble Boy-esque existence for a John Wick-style quest, is clearly the one in distress.

The premise is silly and the bloodshed is plentiful, but Novocaine is far from unfeeling. Perhaps its greatest asset is its earnestness. Our wet cat of a protagonist isn’t the only one who risks life and limb for human connection, and while the kidnappers are mostly just sociopathic thugs, one character turns out to be a great foil for Nathan with a very different relationship to pain. By the end, it’s apparent that Novocaine isn’t just about some guy who can’t feel physical pain. This is a story about the emotional agony of vulnerability, and the depths we will go to to share our lives – and our feelings – with other people. It’s set during the Christmas season, but the fact that Novocaine is premiering almost exactly five years after we all went into isolation in response to the COVID-19 pandemic feels somehow more appropriate.

We’ve all seen plenty of movies with fish-out-of-water heroes who groan or flail their way through fights. These can lean too far into cynicism, offering so much self-awareness that there is little room to surprise or delight. (For a recent example, see the horror-romance Love Hurts.) Novocaine, by contrast, effectively sells this well-trod cliche thanks in large part to Quaid, whose character feels grounded despite his wildly unusual circumstances. Quaid brings Nathan to vivid, glorious life, adding a sort of gawky ferality that is a real joy to watch. Humanizing details from the script – like the fact that Nathan’s online handle is MagicNateBall – pair perfectly with Quaid’s impenetrable charm.

That’s not to say that the script never crosses the line between clever and cutesy. (His last name shares a syllable with the word “novocaine” – we get it!) But this is a consummate popcorn movie, and it’s invigorating to see a fun, well-made, original film in a cinematic landscape that increasingly feels overtaken by shared-universe sequels and dour dramas. Novocaine goes down easy – or as easily as any movie with gory compound fractures and fingernail removal can.

  • Autopsies show Gene Hackman died of heart disease; wife died of hantavirus

Autopsies show Gene Hackman died of heart disease; wife died of hantavirus

Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman was in an advanced state of Alzheimer’s and died of heart disease and other factors likely days after his wife, Betsy Arakawa, died of a rare virus spread by mice, according to autopsy results released Friday in New Mexico.

Hackman, 95, Arakawa, 64, and one of their dogs were found dead Feb. 26 in separate rooms of the couple’s Santa Fe home.

Hackman’s heart disease and the hantavirus pulmonary syndrome that caused Arakawa’s death were announced at a press conference at the Santa Fe sheriff’s office.

Hackman’s wife died a week before he did, results showed. A reporter asked Sheriff Adan Mendoza if Hackman’s advanced Alzheimer’s had hindered him from perceiving her death.

“I would assume that is the case,” Mendoza told reporters.

“He was in an advanced state of Alzheimer’s, and it is quite possible he was not aware she was deceased,” Heather Jarrell, chief medical investigator at the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator, told reporters.

Arakawa is believed to have died around Feb. 11, authorities said Friday, citing the date of her last email.

Jarrell determined Hackman died on Feb. 18, based on his pacemaker activity.

Hantavirus is a rare disease in the U.S., with most cases concentrated in the western states of New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and Utah. In northern New Mexico, the virus is predominantly spread through the droppings and urine of deer mice.

The virus is often transmitted through the air when people sweep out sheds or clean closets where mice have been living. It begins with flu-like symptoms and can lead to heart and lung failure, with around 38% to 50% of cases resulting in death.

New Mexico has experienced between one and seven cases annually in recent years, according to health data.

State health inspectors found no particular sign of rodents inside Hackman’s home but did detect rodent activity in structures outside the house, State Veterinarian Erin Phipps told reporters.

Hackman and Arakawa, a pianist, had called Santa Fe home since the 1980s and were active in the city’s art community and culinary scene. In recent years, the couple were seen less often in town as Hackman’s health deteriorated. They lived a very private life before their deaths, Mendoza said.

A caretaker at their gated community discovered the couple dead. Sheriff’s deputies found Hackman in the kitchen. Arakawa and a dog were found in a bathroom.

Both Hackman and Arakawa appeared to have suddenly fallen to the floor, and neither showed signs of blunt force trauma.

Arakawa had picked up one of her dogs in a crate on Feb. 9 from a Santa Fe veterinarian, which may explain why the animal was found dead in the crate in the couple’s home on Feb. 26, Mendoza said. Phipps said the dog may have died of starvation.

Hackman, a former Marine known for his raspy voice, appeared in more than 80 films, as well as on television and the stage during a lengthy career that started in the early 1960s.

He earned his first Oscar nomination for his breakout role as the brother of bank robber Clyde Barrow in 1967’s “Bonnie and Clyde.” He won an Oscar for best actor in 1972 for his portrayal of detective Popeye Doyle in “The French Connection,” and in 1993 won an Oscar for best supporting actor for “Unforgiven.”
