The rising rapper Doechii has earned the title of Billboard’s 2025 Woman of the Year, landing her in the same company as Taylor Swift, SZA, Lady Gaga and as last year’s honoree, Karol G.

The news arrives just one month after Doechii won the Grammy for best rap album, only the third woman to win in that category.

When it came time to give her award speech, the tears were immediate. “This category was introduced in 1989. Two women have won, Lauryn Hill — ” she said, correcting herself. “Three women have won. Lauryn Hill, Cardi B and Doechii.”

Now she will be honored as Woman of the Year at the Billboard Women in Music Awards on March 29. Previous honorees include Madonna, Cardi B, Billie Eilish, Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande.

In 2024, The Associated Press named Doechii’s breakout mixtape, “Alligator Bites Never Heal,” one of the best albums of the year — a versatile album that teeters from the romance of her smooth R&B and the acuity of her flows.

“Doechii is taking pop culture by storm, this year becoming the third woman in history to win a Grammy best rap album, and dazzling fans of every musical genre with her breathtaking performances, ultra-candid lyrics and utterly unique sound, style and spirit,” said Hannah Karp, Editor-in-Chief of Billboard in a statement. “We are thrilled to celebrate Doechii and cheer on her continued success.”

Other award recipients at the Billboard Women in Music Awards include aespa, Ángela Aguilar, Erykah Badu, GloRilla, Gracie Abrams, Blackpink’s Jennie, Megan Moroney, Meghan Trainor, Muni Long and Tyla.

The awards show will be held at the YouTube Theater at Hollywood Park in Los Angeles, hosted by Laverne Cox. Billboard Women in Music will air live on March 29 at 7 p.m. Pacific on VIZIO WatchFree+.

Harry Potter and Doctor Who star dies aged 63 as husband posts sad tribute

Simon Fisher-Becker, who starred in Harry Potter and Doctor Who, has died, aged 63.

The veteran actor’s agent, Kim Barry, of Jaffrey Management, said in a statement: “Today I lost not only a client in Simon Fisher-Becker, but a close personal friend of 15 years standing. I shall never forget the phone call I made to him when he was offered the part of Dorium Moldovar in BBC’s Dr Who.

“Simon was also a writer, a raconteur and a great public speaker. He helped me out enormously and was kind, gracious and interested in everyone.”

Also paying tribute to Simon, was his husband, Tony, who wrote in a Facebook post on Saturday: “Hello everyone. This is Tony, Simon’s husband. I have some very sad news. At 2:50 this afternoon Simon passed away.

“I’ll be keeping this account open for a while. I’m not sure at this point if I’ll be posting again. Thank you.”

Simon, who starred in the Oscar-winning Les Miserables as Master of the House, also appeared alongside Matt Smith’s Doctor Who in the BBC time travelling series, playing blue-skinned intergalactic black marketeer, Dorium Maldovar.

He was also Hufflepuff House’s resident ghost, Fat Friar, in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

His other TV work included One Foot in the Grave, The Bill, Doctors, Love Soup, Getting On and Afterlife.

Paying tribute to the actor following the news of his death, fans took to social media. One said: “His stage routine was one of the funniest things I’ve heard in ages. A dear man who valued his audiences. RIP Simon, shine on.”

While another wrote: “Really sad news. I met him at a con a few years ago and he was really lovely.”

Pierce Brosnan has insisted that the next James Bond must be British.

The 71-year-old actor is one of many who have taken on the titular role of the ‘007’ franchise over the years and he has insisted that it is a “given” that new bosses of the film series must adhere to the tradition of casting a British star now that Amazon Studios have taken control from Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson.

Speaking to The Sunday Telegraph, he added: “In this world that is moving so fast now, at the speed of light, [the takeover] does come with a certain lament.

“I thought it was coming for some time I guess, but I think it was the right decision for Barbara and Michael.

“It takes great courage for them to let go. They will still have a say in matters. I hope that [Amazon] handles the work and the character with dignity and imagination and respect.”

The ‘Mamma Mia!’ star played the iconic spy from ‘GoldenEye’ in 1995 until he bowed out of the franchise in 2002 with ‘Die Another Day’, and Daniel Craig took over for ‘Casino Royale’ in 2006 before leaving after ‘No Time To Die’ in 2021.

Pierce added: “History has been passed on and I’m very proud to have been part of the history and the legacy of Bond and the movies that I made with Barbara and Michael.

“That we moved the needle, that we brought it back to life. It had been dormant [for] six years and ‘GoldenEye’ was such a success that it continued and went from strength to strength…You know, everything changes, everything falls apart, and I wish them well.”

His comments come after it was announced that Barbara and Michael announced they would be stepping back from ‘James Bond’ after the franchise had been owned by the Broccoli family since 1962’s ‘Dr. No’.

The pair formed a new joint venture with Amazon to house ‘James Bond’s intellectual property rights, with all three parties remaining co-owners of the series.

Barbara said in a statement: “My life has been dedicated to maintaining and building upon the extraordinary legacy that was handed to Michael and me by our father, producer Cubby Broccoli.

“I have had the honour of working closely with four of the tremendously talented actors who have played 007 and thousands of wonderful artists within the industry.

“With the conclusion of ‘No Time to Die’ and Michael retiring from the films, I feel it is time to focus on my other projects.”

After Broccoli and Wilson announced their departure, former ‘Bond’ star Timothy Dalton said he had been left “shocked” the producers were handing the franchise to Amazon.

He told RadioTimes.com: “I was very, very surprised and shocked.

“Barbara is I think a fabulous woman and a wonderful producer, as was her father Cubby Broccoli, who I got on with very well and liked a lot. He was a very powerful and strong anchor for the project.

“Nothing went on that he didn’t want and it’s sad that he’s not with us anymore, that’s all I can say.”

  • How Jon Gries Made His Diabolical Return to ‘The White Lotus’

How Jon Gries Made His Diabolical Return to ‘The White Lotus’

His surprise return as Greg — or “Gary” — started season 3 off with a big twist in a show known for being twisted. What happens next even he needed to wrap his head around.

YOU DON’T CHECK out of a White Lotus without some stories to tell. And nobody has had their White Lotus punch card punched as many times as Jon Gries, whose surprise return to HBO’s prestige social satire upended already rampant speculation about its third season. Gries started the first season in Hawaii as Greg, a soft-spoken and patient suitor for Tanya (Jennifer Coolidge), a high-roller loudly grieving the loss of her mother. By the end of the second season in Sicily, Greg was the architect of Tanya’s untimely demise. By season 3 in Thailand, Greg is “Gary.” Is he living it up with money from Tanya’s insurance policy? Is he hiding out from Italian authorities? Is he looking for a new mark or just looking for a good time with his new Quebecois squeeze?

Gries can’t spill those secrets just yet, but he’s eager to unburden himself of all the stories he’s had to hold close to the vest until now. Like the time Blackpink’s Lisa (who he calls by her legal name, Lalisa) saved him from blowing the whole secret operation. Or the time creator Mike White changed everything Gries thought he knew about Greg with just one word. And then the time he did it again. Or the many, many lies Gries had to tell to keep his casting a secret — and the apology tour that’s followed. (First stop, Men’s Health.)

Zooming into our conversation with Pablo, his vibrant green eclectus parrot, palling around on his shoulder, Gries talks about the close calls that almost blew his cover in Thailand, the mental gymnastics he went through to figure out just what kind of guy Greg really is, and how he and Natasha Rothwell are getting ready to go head to head.

MEN’S HEALTH: You appearance in the season premiere was a total shock. How the hell did you keep it secret?

JON GRIES: You know, that’s why I’m so happy to finally be able to do interviews. It feels good to finally be able to talk about it — and it’s also a way of apologizing to a lot of people I’ve lied to. I’ve lied to so many friends. Literally, one of my dear friends said to me the other day, “Dude, I just saw you on White Lotus! You never told me!” I said, “No, I know I didn’t. I’m sorry!” He said, “But it’s me!” And I just said, “But I had to kept my mouth shut!”

MH: What was the excuse you gave people when you had to leave town for a few months?

JG: I told them I went to the Philippines to shoot a remake of a movie called The Sand Pebbles, which was a real movie with Steve McQueen from the ’60s. I said “they” were making a miniseries of it. And people would ask, “Well, who’s they? What company?” And I’d say, “Oh, it’s European. It’s…EuropaCorp!”

MH: That is a very specific lie.

JG: It was a blatant lie. It wasn’t even a white lie. It was a bald-faced lie.

MH: You’re a better liar than Greg.

JG: I mean, it kills me to do it! But, you know, I was compelled.

MH: I’m surprised nobody spotted you in Thailand.

JG: Somebody did! There was one guy who saw me. He stopped me at a restaurant and was like, “White Lotus! I heard you guys are here shooting. So you’re back?” And I said, “No, no. I’m just visiting. If you had some friends who were working in Thailand and they told you to come visit, wouldn’t you jump on the opportunity and visit them?” And he bought the story, luckily.

Another night, I was out with some of the cast. We went to go get some food. Usually I would stay away, but one night, I went to dinner with Lalisa and Christian Friedel and Jason Isaacs and his wife Emma. We were walking down the street, and suddenly Lalisa just ran away from me. And she ran because she realized people were going to look at her, then look at me, and then connect the dots. I said, “Where’s she going?” And the rest of them were like, “She’s avoiding being connected to you!”

MH: How did you have to recalibrate you performance with each season as you learned more about Greg? He’s like an onion — the more layers you peel back, the more he stinks.

JG: That’s a really good way of looking at it. Each time it’s been a reset. Certainly, going from season 1 to season 2 was quite a large reset. When Mike texted me between seasons, he said, “Hey, I’m writing you in for season 2. Are you up for it?” I said, “Are you kidding? Anytime, anywhere.” Then he said, “By the way, Greg is diabolical.” That was all he gave me! Now, the best con men are incredibly charming. Not to say that I was incredibly charming, but Greg was pretty charming in the face of Tanya’s drama. He was willing to take whatever she was throwing at him. So then to see how season 2 played out, it worked to add “diabolical” to Greg’s character.

But then before season 3 — I don’t know, I tried to equivocate my way out of the idea that Greg really was part of the plot to kill Tanya. I guess I just hadn’t really fully embraced it. I write a very involved history for my characters — and I try and write their future as well. I’d always written character histories, but then I read that Jeff Bridges writes the postscript to the story too, and I thought that was really interesting. Why not continue the story, see where it goes, just for yourself? But as I was writing it, I kept getting hung up. Maybe, maybe, he didn’t want her to be killed. Maybe he wanted her to be caught having sex with some Italian guy and he was going to extort her. Or is he truly just a psychopath?

So then season 3 was starting production, and I was in Thailand. I saw Mike White walking to set early one the morning, like 6:30 or 7:00 in the morning, and I ran over and caught up with him. I said, “I know you’re going to work, but I just have a couple of questions. So, Greg. Is he really… fully… totally…? I mean, am I overthinking this? Is he a psychopath?” And Mike just said, “Psychopath.” And just walked away! And then of course I went back and watched season 2 again, and said to myself, “God, what a pretzel I twisted myself into thinking he wasn’t a psychopath. Of course he is!”

MH: In season 2, so much about Greg was revealed via Quentin. So, all of these revelations about your character played out without you being there to inhabit them as an actor. How do you catch up with Greg — physically and emotionally — so that you’re living in the version of this guy that we see in season 3?

JG: That’s a really good question. I think it’s always lovely when other characters talk about your character — because it adds to the game. How much of it was real? How much of it was Quentin’s memory of Greg from long ago and far away? There was something there! And it gave me a lot. It gave me a lot to think about with Greg, which I think you’ll see continue in this season.

MH: Do you think of him as a user, based on how he treated Tanya and may have treated Quentin all those years back?

JG: Yes. In fact, that that’s exactly what helped me as an actor; what was most informative to me was Quentin’s heartbreak with Greg. This guy just worked his way through Quentin, and he didn’t really care. He doesn’t have any discernment. He just gets what he can get from who he needs to get it from.

MH: When we first met him in season 1, we saw this nice, charming, patient guy with an age-appropriate taste in women. Now we see this surly, snappy guy with Chloe, a woman almost half his age. What do you think it says about him?

JG: I think “user” is the appropriate word. He’s a user. I don’t think he’s ever been in love. I don’t think he knows what love is. And I don’t think he cares. Quite honestly, I think he feels absolutely free from that ridiculous emotion, and that’s a comfort to him. To him, it’s all folly. He’s not mindful of his relationships. To him, a relationship is just: We’re on this path, in this lane together. You can do whatever you want within this lane, but don’t go outside of it, outside my jurisdiction. Whatever you do, you include me. That’s where I think his head is at.

MH: Chloe says that the locals use the term LBH — “Losers Back Home” — to describe guys like Greg. Does he ever think of himself as a loser?

JG: Never, never. In fact, he would probably be the first to say that [the other characters] are all losers in the way that they’re all sitting around aging and toxifying themselves with all their concerns about this, concerns about that. This is a guy who can just as easily live with nothing or live with lots. At this particular juncture, he’s living with lots and he’s going to live it up.

MH: Materially, he’s living with lots. But it does seem like his inner life is empty.

JG: Yes, and I do think that’s a comfort zone for him. I don’t think he even has the bandwidth for more than that. He doesn’t care. For him, sharing his feelings is like: “I want to work out.” “I’m hungry, I want to eat.” “I want to have sex.” “I want to have a party.” It just doesn’t really manifest as like: “How are you doing?” “I want to check in with you.” “Are you good?” And if he were to do something like that, it would be purely performative, like he’s just acting out a part, you know?

MH: The show seems to be setting up a cat and mouse game between Belinda and “Gary.” Do you think the risk of Belinda realizing who he is gives him anything approaching anxiety? Or is he similarly ice cold in those matters?

JG: He just doesn’t invest in those kinds of emotions. But he does have a rule — or rather, I gave him a rule, and I don’t know where it came. His one rule is that he’ll give you one chance. He’ll give you a chance, he will set the rules, and if you don’t take it, then he always has a plan B. And plan B could be as simple as: “I packed your bags, the car’s coming, and you have to go now.” I could see him doing that to someone like Chloe. Or it could be what happened to Tanya. And whatever his intentions might be with [Belinda] or anyone else, he really just wants people to understand that there’s no second chance. And I feel like he doesn’t ever want to go to plan B simply because it’s inconvenient.

MH: I loved the cuts back and forth between Belinda and “Gary.” There’s a growing franticness in her eyes and a hardness in his. Did you and Natasha Rothwell discuss how you’d approach their reunion beforehand?

JG: No, we just kind of went with it. I don’t think it’s something we would ever really discuss beforehand. The more territory left undiscovered between us, the better it is for us as we try to feel each other out when we’re actually in the scenes.

MH: But I imagine there’s a familiarity with each other’s acting process left over from the first season?

JG: Oh, absolutely. There’s a scene later in the season where [“Gary” and Belinda] stop and talk to each other, and I was doing it a certain way. Sometimes I get an idea caught up in my mind, and I have to play it out. So I thought it might be interesting to play it a certain way. And turned out it wasn’t. So I kind of recalibrated what I did, dialed it off a little bit, and she was like, “Yes, that’s good.” And then she talked to me about it, and suggested I tweak it in a certain way. So I did it that way, and she said, “Yes! That makes me uncomfortable.”

MH: So far, you’ve gone to Hawaii, Sicily, and Thailand with this show. It’s funny that Mike White keeps checking in with you on whether you’d possibly ever want to come back — as if it isn’t a sweet gig.

JG: That’s just how gracious he is. He’s never going to assume that of course any of us will want to come back. There’s no pretense with him, no fronting. He is exactly who he is. And that’s such a breath of fresh air. You get the onion already peeled every time.

  • Chappell Roan Plays Princess (Then Pauper) During Paris Fashion Week

Chappell Roan Plays Princess (Then Pauper) During Paris Fashion Week

Chappell Roan may be a “Midwest Princess,” but this week, she’s also Paris Fashion Week royalty.

The singer kicked off her week with appearances at Rick Owens and Yohji Yamamoto, letting her glam do the talking at both. Working with makeup artist Andrew Dahling, she dove even deeper into her signature drag-inspired look, rocking white face paint alongside cool-toned lip liners and dramatic eyeshadow that swept up into her hairline.

A true devotée of her craft, Roan has adapted her glam for every show she attends, proving she’s just as much a fashion fan as she is a popstar. (For further proof, see her eagerly planning a hangout with model Alex Consani as they both flaunt slicked-back ‘dos).

No one is doing it like Roan — and just to make sure of the fact, she stepped her looks up even more this weekend, working with longtime stylist Genesis Webb. At Vivienne Westwood, she paid tribute to the late designer with catty, royal blue eyeliner and teased orange hair, and artfully draped back her glittering black dress to reveal a single breast (giving a new meaning to her title as mother). A few studded belts and silver hoops helped the singer call back to Westwood’s grungy roots.

Roan switched up her glam on Saturday evening for the Alexander McQueen show. Leaning into the gothic theme of the presentation, she slipped into a pale yellow dress shirt with a dramatic dagger collar, layered atop a black suit with exaggerated hips. Her makeup truly brought the look to life, however, as her ginger hair stuck out of a makeshift pantyhose cap. Like a true Victorian figure — in this case, maybe the hunchback of Notre Dame — her face was ghostly white, save for the black and purple shadows hollowing out her eyes.

Her Paris Fashion Week pinnacle came during the Valentino show today, where she embraced the maximalist look best associated with newly-appointed creative director Alessandro Michele (and herself, of course). As pop icons do, she wore a self-referencing princess gown, complete with a black velvet bodice, big ol’ red bow, and ruffled, Marie Antoinette-esque hoop skirt covered in white tulle.

Adorned with pink flowers and delicate gold leafing, the dress matched her doll-like makeup, tinged by burgundy blush and blue eyeshadow. Skinny brows allowed her to continue channeling her favorite drag divas, while fluttery lashes only furthered her porcelain illusion. Doll or not, one thing’s for certain post-Paris: Roan isn’t going to get left on the shelf.

  • Micro-wineries in Cyprus hope to give the world’s oldest named wine…

Micro-wineries in Cyprus hope to give the world’s oldest named wine…

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) – Praised by the ancient Greek giants Homer and Euripides for its superb quality nearly 3,000 years ago, Cyprus´ Commandaria is the world´s oldest recorded and named wine.

Despite its rich heritage, the sweet wine has struggled to find its niche in the global market. Now a number of micro-wineries in this east Mediterranean island nation are reviving traditional wine-making techniques and giving Commandaria a chance at a long-awaited comeback.

Makers hope to tap rich legends around the ruby red wine.

It´s said to have won the world’s first known wine competition during the 13th century rule of French King Philippe Augustus. English King Richard the Lionheart is said to have served it to guests at his 1191 wedding in Cyprus. And 14th century Mayor of London Henry Picard reputedly indulged the leaders of England, France, Scotland, Denmark and Cyprus in the Feast of the Five Kings.

The wine, known as “nama” in antiquity, was renamed by the medieval Knights Hospitaller, who set up headquarters during the Third Crusade at an estate known for its wine production that they named Grande Commanderie.

The island´s Orthodox Church later adopted Commandaria as its communion wine during Byzantine times.

Production peaked when Venice ruled Cyprus in the 15th and 16th centuries and prized the wine for its sweetness and complex bouquet.

Now bottles are sold for around 20 euros ($20) to up to 150.

The wine’s notes of honey, raisin, walnut, fig, carob, cinnamon, coffee and caramel are attributed to the island´s rich volcanic soil, said Christakis Nicolaou, community leader of Zoopigi village, home to the Commandaria museum.

Annual production of the wine in recent years hovered at around 200,000 bottles because demand tapered off, according to Savvas Constantinou, a beverage inspector with Cyprus´ agriculture and environment ministry.

One factor is the exclusion of some 800,000 Commandaria-loving Russian tourists as a result of sanctions imposed following Russia´s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Constantinou said a bid to expand into the massive Chinese market made headway five years ago but wavered after producers couldn´t meet demand.

Wine expert Demetri Walters, who holds the prestigious title of Master of Wines, said Commandaria sales haven´t gained much traction abroad primarily because of a lack of marketing. For instance, the island´s main producer KEO have been slow to understand the potential of the wine, particularly their older vintages.

“A shame, as their Commandaria wines are very good,” Walters told the Associated Press. “The unique and antique history, the extraordinary quality across the two styles and the terrific value for money…Everyone who tastes it for the first time with me is blown away by the complexity of the wine.”

Walters said although sweet wines are “out of fashion” except in the specialist trade, this is slowly changing for Commandaria. He said the wine was entered the UK market in recent years, but as a niche offering.

Wineries such as Revecca in the mountain village of Ayios Mamas have found a steady domestic and foreign following, with sales on an upward swing since it opened in 2015.

Its Commandaria last year won top prize at the national wine competition. The winery employs three people and produces 3,000 bottles a year.

Winery curator Nikolas Christodoulides said he´s experimenting with bespoke varieties catering to clients’ tastes.

“Our focus is on improving quality rather than being fixated on quantity,” Christodoulides said. The approach has worked for one Israeli couple who, according to Christodoulides, flies to Cyprus just to replenish their stock.

Commandaria is made with dark Mavro and white Xynisteri grapes that are indigenous to Cyprus. They are left in the sunshine after harvest for seven to 12 days to bring out the distinctive sweetness.

The wine is matured in reused oak barrels for at least two years in line with strict production laws to conform with the European Union´s protected designation of origin. That means authentic Commandaria comes only from 14 villages on the southern face of the Troodos mountain range, where they´re exposed to sunlight throughout the day.

Some wineries produce a darker, sweeter version made strictly from the Mavro grapes. That version is preferred at the Karseras winery in the village of Doros, with an annual average production of 40 tons.

Manager Philippos Karseras is encouraged by an upswing in domestic consumption, though it isn´t quite enough to make up for the loss of the Russian market.

But those running the Revecca winery believe that these small wineries will gradually win back consumers.

“We have ensure the consistency of our product´s quality first and win over the domestic market before we can make a collective push to market Commandaria abroad,” Christodoulides said.

Everyone rejoiced when it was confirmed that Jon Bernthal would reprise his iconic role as Frank Castle/The Punisher in Daredevil: Born Again, but it still left fans everywhere curious if he was going to show up in any other MCU projects, similar to how Charlie Cox has appeared as Matt Murdock/Daredevil in four MCU projects before Born Again. It was announced not long ago that Bernthal would return after Daredevil: Born Again in a Punisher Spotlight/Special Presentation project, but plot details about the Disney+ series are being kept under wraps at this time. However, Bernthal recently caught up with The Hollywood Reporter at the worldwide premiere of The Accountant 2, and he teased what fans can expect to see when the solo Punisher project hits Disney+ next year:

“It’s going to be dark; Frank has no interest in breaking out the darkness. It’s not going to be easy. I don’t know. If that’s the Netflix tone, then that’s what it’s going to be. It will not be Punisher-lite, I promise you that.”

Not long after news of the project was revealed, Marvel Studios Head of TV and Streaming Brad Winderbaum confirmed that Bernthal would make his feature writing debut on the project and write Frank Castle’s story himself. The project will also be directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, who previously worked with Bernthal on We Run This City, the crime thriller spin-off series streaming on Max. The Punisher has yet to appear in Daredevil: Born Again, but previous teasers and trailers have already confirmed his presence in the series, and now that Bernthal is playing in the MCU sandbox, the door is wide open for Marvel characters to appear in his solo Punisher project. The most obvious crossover is more Daredevil/Punisher content, but cameos from Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio), Echo (Alaqua Cox), or even Spider-Man (Tom Holland) are impossible to rule out.

How Will the Punisher Fit Into ‘Daredevil: Born Again’?

    Close

Other Marvel Netflix characters such as Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll), Foggy Nelson (Elden Hensen), and Bullseye (Wilson Bethel) have already appeared in Daredevil: Born Again, but Punisher won’t be seen until later in the season. Brad Winderbaum teased Frank Castle’s role in the series in the weeks leading up to Daredevil: Born Again, saying that he’s “a bull in a china shop,” and that Matt will turn to Frank when he needs something done that he isn’t willing to do. Matt and Frank have always had differing philosophies on how to handle criminals, but a villain like Muse may force Matt to make a hard decision in Daredevil: Born Again.

The Punisher Spotlight/Special Presentation project does not yet have an official release date, but it is expected to hit Disney+ in 2026. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates and watch Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+.

The MCU Needs to Introduce the Real Intelligencia

How the Intelligencia Would Change the MCU

Which MCU Villains Would Make Up the Leader’s Intelligencia?

Captain America: Brave New World is finally in theaters, sending Sam Wilson on a harrowing journey ahead of his debut as the new leader of the Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The thirty-fifth film in the MCU follows the new Captain America as he unravels a sinister plot that leads him directly to Dr. Samuel Sterns, a.k.a. the Leader, who has spent the last decade plotting revenge against the new President of the United States, General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. The Leader’s return marks the character’s first appearance since his introduction in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, finally closing a long-standing plot hole that has bothered fans for years.

Unfortunately, the Leader’s return was disappointing to many MCU fans, especially after waiting so long for Tim Blake Nelson’s villain to resurface. While Brave New World is performing better than expected with fans given the film’s mixed critical reception, most viewers seem to agree that it could have handled the Leader’s return better. While his plan has elements pointing to his incredible intellect and strategy, the Leader’s storyline in Captain America 4 ultimately feels undercooked. However, this doesn’t have to be the end for the green-headed supervillain. The MCU has laid the groundwork to make the Leader the franchise’s best villain yet–if only it picks up a dropped storyline from an infamous Disney+ series.

The MCU Needs to Introduce the Real Intelligencia

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law Holds the Key to Improving the Leader

The Leader’s redemption could come from the MCU’s most infamous Disney+ show. She-Hulk: Attorney at Law was widely criticized for several factors, becoming one of the worst-reviewed Marvel projects in recent history. However, one of its more interesting aspects was the introduction of the Intelligencia, a conspiracy of angry men who plotted together to defame and destroy She-Hulk. While it was largely wasted during the events of the Disney+ series, there is still a chance for the organization to return to the MCU in a more comics-accurate form. In Marvel Comics, the Intelligencia is a team of supervillain geniuses put together by the Leader. The council was envisioned as an easy means for the world’s most intelligent supervillains to exchange information and devise strategies with which to combat the Avengers and other heroes. The Intelligencia became the universe’s most sinister think tank, working together to accomplish their evil plans efficiently and covertly.

The dangerous supervillain team was responsible for several notable events in Marvel Comics. Together, the Intelligencia stole valuable information from the Library of Alexandria, summoned the Beyonder, and were even responsible for the creation of the Red Hulk. The MCU needs to adapt this comics-accurate version of the Intelligencia after Captain America: Brave New World. Now imprisoned on the Raft, the Leader has plenty of time to devise his next plot, which could involve calling on villainous allies from around the world to form the first lineup of the true Intelligencia. Together, this supervillain team could pose a major threat to the MCU, threatening even the mighty Avengers.

How the Intelligencia Would Change the MCU

The Marvel Cinematic Universe Needs a Supervillain Team

The introduction of the real Intelligencia could change the MCU forever. Thus far, the MCU has largely dealt with one-off villains who appear as the major antagonists of one project before being killed off or permanently incapacitated. While there have been a handful of recurring villains, like Loki, Baron Zemo, and Agatha Harkness, the MCU has a strange tendency to redeem or at least nerf antagonists in their later appearances. The introduction of a supervillain team like the Intelligencia gives the MCU to build up a store of recurring antagonists who present a consistent threat to the Avengers. This would help round out the MCU, making it feel less episodic and more like the living, breathing universe presented in Marvel Comics. It would also go a long way in amending the regular criticism that the MCU tends to fail the comics’ most prominent villains.

The Intelligencia could continue to pose a threat well beyond the Multiverse Saga, acting as a terrific foil to the Avengers for many years to come. So far, the Avengers have mostly faced singular villains like Ultron and Thanos. While these Big Bads often have an army at their behest, the Avengers have never faced a true team of enemies, each member with their own skills and aptitudes. The Leader’s Intelligencia would be a dark counterpart to the Avengers, perhaps giving Earth’s Mightiest Heroes the most difficult fight they’ve ever had. The introduction of this team would also frame the Leader as one of the most influential villains in the MCU, having put together the one group capable of destroying the Avengers.

The Leader’s New Team Is an Excellent Opportunity to Bring Back Old MCU Villains

    Close

Several villains from the Marvel Cinematic Universe would make perfect members of the Intelligencia. The Leader would be the natural choice to gather and command the group, just as he does in the comics, selecting the brightest, most dangerous, and most sinister villains from around the world. His first choice to join the Intelligencia might be Baron Helmut Zemo, who managed to rip the Avengers apart from the inside during the events of Captain America: Civil War. The Leader’s storyline in Brave New World strongly resembles Zemo’s in Civil War, as both villains used their strategic brains to outthink enemies far stronger than they. Interestingly, Zemo is also imprisoned in the Raft following the events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. As such, the two villains may come in contact with one another during their shared prison time.

Dr. Arnim Zola, a Hydra scientist from World War II, may also make an interesting addition to the team. As revealed in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Zola’s consciousness was downloaded onto an expansive computer network that enhanced his intelligence enough to accurately predict the future. These skills, while similar to the Leader’s, could prove useful in the Intelligencia’s inevitable battles with the Avengers. Though Zola was seemingly destroyed during the events of The Winter Soldier, it wouldn’t be too outrageous to believe that he would have made a backup of his mainframe to ensure his survival. Additionally, the introduction of the Intelligencia could lead to the return of M.O.D.O.K., an infamous villain who was introduced and seemingly killed off in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. M.O.D.O.K. is a prominent member of the Intelligencia in Marvel Comics, contributing his vast brain power and strategic thinking to the team’s more daring operations. The MCU could even use the Intelligencia as a means to redeem M.O.D.O.K. following his largely unsatisfying appearance in Quantumania.

Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk, a.k.a. Kingpin, could also find his way onto the Intelligencia. Kingpin is the Thanos of Marvel’s street-level world, using his vast resources to rule the criminal underworld of New York City with an iron fist. With his return in Daredevil: Born Again, Fisk is elected to the office of mayor, officially making him one of the MCU’s most prominent and powerful villains. His newfound resources could make him an excellent fit in the Leader’s new supervillain team. The Leader could use a man with influence on a political level, especially after losing his influence over the White House during the events of Brave New World.

The possibilities are endless when it comes to introducing the Intelligencia to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Captain America: Brave New World may have disappointed some fans with its handling of the Leader, but there is still a chance to turn Tim Blake Nelson’s character into one of the most important villains in the franchise.

Doechii named 2025 Woman of the Year by Billboard

The rising rapper Doechii has earned the title of Billboard´s 2025 Woman of the Year, landing her in the same company as Taylor Swift, SZA, Lady Gaga and as last year’s honoree, Karol G.

The news arrives just one month after Doechii won the Grammy for best rap album, only the third woman to win in that category.

  • ‘We’re Giving It Our All’ Jon Bernthal Promises Fans A No Holds Barred Punisher In The MCU

‘We’re Giving It Our All’ Jon Bernthal Promises Fans A No Holds Barred Punisher In The MCU

    Summary

The return of Jon Bernthal’s Punisher in a Disney+ special may push the MCU’s limits on cold brutality. Bernthal promises his Punisher will maintain its dark tone and complexity, assuring fans of a faithful adaptation. Bernthal’s portrayal of the Punisher is highly acclaimed, giving fans hope for the character’s future in the MCU.

Daredevil: Born Again has finally arrived in all its grounded glory within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the show has already spawned a spin off project that’s recently gotten a particularly important endorsement from its leading man.

Daredevil: Born Again has been a bottomless pit of surprises for fans of the Charlie Cox-led Netflix series that preceded it, and one of the most significant additions to the MCU the show has promised is the return of Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, a character as far removed from the MCU and Disney’s family-friendly appeal. Fans have since been concerned about whether the franchise would change the Punisher to give the character a more MCU-friendly vibe, despite promises of unexpected levels of gritty, grounded ultraviolence making its way onto Disney+ via Born Again.

Marvel’s approach to resurrecting Daredevil could provide their troubled take on Moon Knight a new chance to shine.

It’s been rumored that Marvel Studios was developing a new Punisher TV series for a while now, and that rumbling was recently confirmed with the announcement of a Punisher special for Disney+, with Bernthal set to reprise the titular role alongside his appearances on Daredevil: Born Again. While fans are both excited and doubly worried about the character’s violent crusade getting whitewashed, Bernthal has come forward to offer some assurances. “I care very deeply about Frank,” the actor assured fans in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m really grateful that I’m getting the opportunity to tell the story that I think the fans deserve. We’re giving it our all and we’re trying to tell a Frank Castle story that we’re going to turn our back on the audience — it’s not going to be easy, it’s not going to be light, and I think it’s the version that this character deserves and I’m just beyond honored and grateful that we get the opportunity.” He also gave fans a brief comment on how it’ll compare to the Netflix fare.

It’s going to be dark; Frank has no interest in breaking out the darkness. It’s not going to be easy. I don’t know if that’s the Netflix tone, then that’s what it’s going to be. It will not be Punisher-lite, I promise you that.

While a scheduling conflict might have brought the Punisher to Born Again, the character’s arrival is timely as the ultimate litmus test for how far the MCU is willing to push the envelope on the sort of cold brutality that the Daredevil revival already displayed in its first two episodes. A solo project for the Punisher is sure to be a first for the MCU, for better or worse. Bernthal understands the character better than most, and put in a stellar performance in the Netflix era that bore that understanding out on the screen. Still, it was a bold decision to bring the character in at all, especially with someone as passionate about him as Bernthal has proven to be in the past. It’s been the trend that stars attached to Marvel projects are not massive fans of the characters themselves, and Bernthal fit that bill once upon a time. However, since his original casting for the Netflix shows, he’s immersed himself in the character’s most important comic book stories and developed a love for the character and his complexity.

    Close

Bernthal is easily the best live-action version of the Punisher that fans have gotten, with many casual fans likely unaware that anyone else has even played the character in live-action. If anyone can bring the character to the MCU with his grit and complex relationship with morality intact, it’s him. Fans can likely take him at his word that the upcoming special will be worthy of the name in its execution, and enjoy his appearance in Daredevil: Born Again while they wait for the upcoming solo project.

Daredevil: Born Again is available to stream on Disney+, with the Punisher special currently set for a 2026 release.
