Wife of ‘Ghost Adventures’ star posted eerie photo week before she…

The wife of “Ghost Adventures” star Aaron Goodwin posted a picture of them cuddling with their pet cat a week before she was arrested for allegedly trying to plot his murder with the help of an incarcerated convicted killer.

“Cuddle puddle with my boys,” Victoria Goodwin captioned her Instagram post.

The eerie image showed the paranormal investigator’s hand on Victoria’s leg with their cat between them as they lounged on a couch.

She also posted a photo of her smiling alongside Goodwin on a mini-golf date for Valentine’s Day in Las Vegas.

“Mini golf with my Valentine,” her post read on Feb 14.

The “Ghost Adventures” star, 48, also gushed over his wife over the date, when he showed Victoria mid-stroke with the caption, “My valentine always beats me at mini golf.”

On March 6, Victoria, 32, was arrested and charged for solicitation to commit murder and conspiracy to murder, after an investigation allegedly unearthed a wicked murder-for-hire plot through messages with an inmate at an undisclosed Florida prison.

She had allegedly been messaging the inmate — identified as inmate Grant Amato — since October 2024 and openly expressing wanting to kill Goodwin to get out of her marriage, according to a police report first obtained by TMZ.

Amato killed his family after stealing $200,000 to wire the cash to a woman in Bulgaria whom he had been speaking to on an adult website in 2019.

He is currently serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole at the Tomoka Correctional Institution in Daytona Beach, Fla.

The convicted killer was featured in the Paramount+ true crime documentary “CTRL+ALT+DESIRE.”

Police said Victoria told them she watched the documentary and became pen pals with Amato while he was behind bars, according to TMZ.

She allegedly offered $11,515 to pay for the job and police claim that Victoria made a down payment of $2,500 to have her ghost-hunting husband killed.

Victoria also allegedly passed along info about her husband’s location to the Amato to provide to a hitman he was communicating with to pull off the kill.

The 48-year-old paranormal investigator was allegedly filming “Ghost Adventures” in California when the hit was intended to happen.

“He’s asleep right now in the hotel room … I need to know what’s going on. Can I get an update. Was it done?” the inmate texted the hitman, according to police.

It’s unclear what happened that stopped the alleged hit from going down.

Victoria has denied ever wanting to have her husband killed.

She is being held on $100,000 bail and had her initial court appearance on Tuesday, Clark County jail records show.

Goodwin was allegedly “blindsided and devastated at this turn of events” and “thought he was in a happy marriage,” sources told TMZ.

The couple tied the knot at Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion in California in August 2022 and live in Las Vegas.

The paranormal cameraman is best known for his role alongside paranormal investigator Zak Bagans on “Ghost Adventures.”

Bagans told TMZ it’s an “emotional time” for his ghost-hunting co-star and “he’s trying to give him love and support.”

The two have been friends since Goodwin, of Oregon, and Bagans, of Illinois, moved to Nevada around the same time in 2005 to pursue filmmaking and have worked together in the public eye since “Ghost Adventures” premiered in 2008.

‘Deeply Disappointed’: Tiana Voice Actress React to Disney+ Series Cancellation

In 2009, Disney premiered The Princess and the Frog, introducing Tiana, the first black princess. The animated film was a modest success, and it was expected to continue as a TV series.

Disney announced plans for a television spin-off titled Tiana in December 2020. Anika Noni Rose, who voiced the lead character in the 2009 animated film, was confirmed to return to reprise her role. A few days after Disney officially shelved the series, Rose shared her disappointment in an Instagram post.

Disney’s Snow White has been plagued by many controversies, prompting the studio to scale back its premiere plans for the movie.

“Last week an announcement was made regarding the cancellation of the series, Tiana. I’ve been getting loads of messages expressing kindness, support, and overwhelming disappointment,” Anika Noni Rose’s message began. “I’ve also been asked by different outlets to make a statement, but I’d rather talk to you directly.”

The series was a long time coming, and a lot of beautiful work was put into it.

She clarified, “I, too, am deeply disappointed that the continuation of Tiana’s journey in series form has been cut short. The series was a long time coming, and a lot of beautiful work was put into it by all the creatives involved, including — but not limited to — longtime champion Jenn Lee, our wonderful writer/ director Joyce Sherri, some fabulous animators, and an amazing music team.”

In the message, the actress further encouraged fans to show their love for the project. She highlighted that, “as hurtful as it is,” that the project she’s put her “heart and soul” into has “prematurely ended,” she encouraged fans to watch the “Tiana Special Event” when it airs. She encouraged fans to watch it with friends, family, coworkers, and everyone. “Show your love and your desire in the numbers. Make that desire an undeniable and real thing.” The cancelation news also came with the promise of a short-form special, which might lead to further expansion.

She also thanked fans for their love and dedication and for helping “Princess Tiana to still be such a vibrant, impactful presence.”

The Princess and the Frog Was a Modest Success

John Musker and Ron Clements directed the 2009 animated musical, and they also wrote the script alongside Rob Edwards based on the Brothers Grimm’s folk tale The Frog Prince. The animated film was set in the 1920s New Orleans, following a waitress named Tiana who hoped to open her own restaurant. Instead of following the typical fairytale, after kissing a frog, she transforms into a frog herself and must find a way to return to human form before it’s too late. The Princess and the Frog voice cast includes Bruno Campos, Michael-Leon Wooley, Jim Cummings, John Goodman, Keith David, and Oprah Winfrey, among others.

The Princess and the Frog received positive reviews from the critics, holding an 85% Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, and 74% from the audience. The movie grossed $270.9 million against a $105 million budget (via The Numbers), making it a modest success, grossing over 2.5 times its budget. It added another $117.7 million from DVD and Blu-ray sales, further highlighting the interest in the film.

Although no sequel was granted, the Tiana series was announced at the same time as the Moana series, which was later turned into a billion-dollar animated film. The series underwent several changes, as it was originally supposed to have Stella Meghie as writer and director, who would become the first African-American director for a Walt Disney Animation Studios project. In October 2023, Joyce Sherri came on board instead. There were also discussions about a live-action remake of the 2009 animated film.

The series has been teased for years, with a first-look released in 2021 and a tentative release date in 2022. Tiana was later postponed until 2023 and 2024, with Disney officially canceling the plans in March 2025. The short special doesn’t have a release date yet.

  • ‘Snow White’ Hollywood Premiere To Be “Scaled Back” Amid Ongoing Backlash

‘Snow White’ Hollywood Premiere To Be “Scaled Back” Amid Ongoing Backlash

Usually, a studio tries not to acknowledge when there are controversies surrounding a project, but Disney is proving not to be naive in the case of its upcoming live-action adaptation of Snow White. The film has been at the center of various discourses since it was first announced, and it has only grown with even more controversies involving its leading ladies, Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot. Seeing that not much can be done to defuse the negative word of mouth, Disney has made an incredible decision to not go full-on Hollywood with the film’s premiere.

Per Variety, despite the film still hosting a Hollywood premiere on March 15, it will be without the normal bells and whistles that go along with a movie of this stature. The premiere will consist of a pre-party and screening taking place at the El Capitan Theatre with Zegler and Gadot on deck to attend. What will be noticeably missing are the red-carpet press, who would usually be on hand to get interviews with the cast and other creatives behind the film. Disney will only be hosting coverage of a limited number of photographers and a house crew.

Related Disney’s ‘Snow White’ Gets More Bad News With Revised Opening Weekend Projections

Heigh-ho, heigh-ho, the live-action reimagining isn’t going to fare too well based on the latest box office forecast.

    Posts 4

While Disney isn’t openly discussing why the Hollywood premiere has been scaled back, it’s not hard to tell their reasoning behind wanting to minimize the number of interviews that could take place surrounding the film.

Much of the turmoil started when Zegler was cast as the titular character, something that sparked an unnecessary backlash from toxic Disney fans who questioned why a Latina actress was taking on the role. To defend herself, the actress spoke out against the toxicity by calling the 1937 animated film “dated” and elaborated by saying, “She’s not going to be dreaming about true love. She’s dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be.” She also stated that, in the original film, the prince “literally stalks Snow White,” and, unfortunately, Zegler’s response did not quell the complaints.

The Live-Action ‘Snow White’ Has Seen Controversy Since it was Announced

Politics has also played a part in the backlash. Gal Gadot spoke up about the Hamas attacks on Oct. 7 on her social media accounts, and that was met with its fair share of criticism. The actress is Israeli, and has been known to be an outspoken voice about Israel and the ongoing war. On the other hand, Zegler has promoted “free Palestine” on her social media. This has led to speculation over whether the differing stances have led to a rift between the pair, which would certainly have been a main subject of press questions if the premiere had gone ahead as normal.

Another aspect of the film that has garnered controversy has been the movie’s portrayal of little people and Disney’s willingness to perpetuate negative stereotypes. Peter Dinklage, during an appearance on the WTF With Mark Maron podcast, took the film to task for this by saying, “Literally no offense to anything, but I was sort of taken aback. They were very proud to cast a Latino actress as Snow White, but you’re still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Take a step back and look at what you’re doing here.” Disney was quick to comment after Dinklage’s podcast appearance by saying:

“To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community.”

Whether this all affects the film’s box office remains to be seen, but first projections for the film’s opening weekend have not been extremely positive. Should reviews be stellar, Disney will likely have another big hit on their hands despite all the turmoil that has followed the production. Certain projects are immune to these controversies and the familiarity of the story might bring out an audience no matter how much toxicity surrounds it. One thing that is certain, however, is that Disney is very aware of the many elephants in the room.

‘Ghost Adventures’ star’s wife arrested for allegedly hiring hitman…

“Ghost Adventures” star Aaron Goodwin’s wife was arrested for allegedly trying to hire a hitman to kill him, according to a new report.

Victoria Goodwin was charged last week with solicitation to commit murder and conspiracy to commit murder after allegedly planning to kill her husband of almost three years while he was filming the show, TMZ reported Monday.

Victoria had been communicating with a prison inmate in Florida since October 2024 about wanting to get out of her marriage, according to a police report obtained by the outlet.

“Am I a bad person? Because I chose to end his existence. Not divorce,” she allegedly wrote in one message.

Police also uncovered messages in which Victoria purportedly provided information about Aaron’s location and “Ghost Adventures” filming schedule in California to send the hitman after him.

Victoria allegedly set aside $11,515 to pay the hitman with an upfront payment of $2,500, per authorities.

Her plan was uncovered, however, when correctional officers confiscated the inmate’s phone as contraband. In it, police found a message between the prisoner and the hitman that read, “He’s asleep right now in the hotel room … I need to know what’s going on. Can I get an update. Was it done?”

It is unclear, though, what happened with the hitman or how the alleged plot was hindered.

When questioned by police, Victoria admitted she and Aaron were having marital problems but insisted she never wanted him killed. She alleged she was merely fantasizing about not having a husband and did not remember sending the messages.

As for the money, she claimed she thought it would be used for cellphones.

According to Clark County jail records, Victoria was arrested in Nevada last Thursday and is being held on a $100,000 bond. She is set to appear before a judge Tuesday morning.

Aaron spoke to TMZ about his wife’s arrest, saying he was blindsided by the plot, as he believed they were happy in their marriage.

Aaron’s “Ghost Adventure” co-star, Zak Bagans, also told the outlet that friends and family are rallying around the paranormal investigator.

The couple — who tied the knot at Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion in August 2022 — most recently boasted on social media about their Valentine’s Day plans.

Billy Joel’s Tour Paused as Singer Battles ‘Medical Condition’

Singer Billy Joel is pausing his current tour for four months due to an undisclosed medical condition.

Last month, Joel fell onstage while performing at the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut, according to the New York Post.

Joel, 75, lost his balance, fell and landed on his side then rolled onto his back. After the fall, he rose to perform one more song.

Eight shows have been rescheduled “due to a medical condition,” according to a post on his Instagram account.

“The current tour will be postponed for four months to allow him to recover from recent surgery and to undergo physical therapy under the supervision of his doctors,” the post said.

“Joel is expected to make a full recovery. The tour will resume at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh on July 5, 2025,” the post said.

“While I regret postponing any shows, my health must come first. I look forward to getting back on stage and sharing the joy of live music with our amazing fans. Thank you for your understanding,” Joel was quoted as saying.

The rescheduled shows will take place in the fall of 2025 and into 2026.

The dates are: Nov. 15, 2025, at Ford Field in Detroit; March 14, 2026, at Rogers Centre in Toronto; April 10, 2026, at Syracuse JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse; May 22, 2026, at Rice Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City; June 6, 2026, at Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh; June 20, 2026, at Anfield Stadium in Liverpool; July 3, 2026, at Charlotte Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte; and a show with a date to be announced at American Family Field in Milwaukee.

In January, Joel rescheduled a Hollywood, Florida, concert because of a “medical procedure,” the Post reported. That show has been scheduled for Nov. 1.

In 2021, he underwent back surgery and later said he lost 50 pounds afterward.

“I had back surgery early this year and the pain afterward was so bad I lost my appetite,” Joel said. “I embraced that, I said, ‘OK, I won’t eat as much,’ and I ate less and less and less and less and then there was just life aggravation and that tends to, you know, impact your appetite too.”

Over the summer, Joel is scheduled to make history by performing at all three New York City-area venues in one summer, according to Billboard.

Joel is scheduled to perform at Yankee Stadium on July 18 with Rod Stewart; MetLife Stadium on Aug. 8 with Stevie Nicks; and Citi Field on Aug. 21 with Sting..

“I’m looking forward to playing these iconic stadiums this summer — each holds personal significance to me,” Joel said

“There’s nothing like the energy of the crowds in New York, and sharing a stage with my friends, Rod Stewart, Sting and Stevie Nicks, whose music always inspires me, is extremely rewarding,” Joel said.

Last July, Joel ended a 10-year residency at Madison Square Garden after 10 years of playing there once a month.

Natasha is dead: Scarlett Johansson rules out Marvel comeback

With crossovers and shifting timelines in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there is always a possibility for a fan-favourite character to return from the dead but Johansson said that won’t happen with Natasha Romanoff, the real name of her “Avengers” character

Hollywood superstar Scarlett Johansson wants Marvel fans to accept one fact: her superhero character Black Widow is dead.

With crossovers and shifting timelines in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there is always a possibility for a fan-favourite character to return from the dead but Johansson said that won’t happen with Natasha Romanoff, the real name of her “Avengers” character.

Natasha was killed off in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame” and the actor went on to headline the 2021 prequel movie “Black Widow”, which marked her last appearance in the MCU.

Johansson, 40, said fans have to let the superhero go.

“Natasha is dead. She is dead. She’s dead. Okay? They just don’t want to believe it. They’re like, ‘But she could come back!’ Look, I think the balance of the entire universe is held in her hand. We’re going to have to let her go. She saved the world. Let her have her hero moment,” she told the InStyle magazine.

The Oscar nominee will next be seen in “Jurassic World Rebirth”, a spin-off in another legendary film franchise.

Johansson revealed that Universal Pictures, the studio behind “Jurassic World Rebirth”, recently asked her about whether or not she would join Instagram to help promote the upcoming movie, an offer she refused.

“I mean, even today, I got an email from Universal, and they’re like, ‘Hey, would you consider joining Instagram in tandem with the release of ‘Jurassic World: Rebirth?’ I get a lot of pressure to join social media. … Is there a way where I could do this and stay true to who I am? It didn’t feel like I could.

“The work that I put out there is all based in truth. That’s the key ingredient. So if I was a person who really enjoyed social media, then I could totally get on the bandwagon. But I’m not. And I think the film will do fine,” she added.

Also starring Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey, “Jurassic World Rebirth” is set to be released in theatres on July 2.

K-Pop star found dead in his home aged 43 leaves fans devastated

K-Pop star Wheesung has been found dead in his home at the age of 43, with tributes pouring in from fans and fellow celebrities. The South Korean singer’s body was reportedly found a ‘significant amount of time’ after his death, according to officials.

Police in Seoul, who are investigating his death, say the singer was found in a state of cardiac arrest and that they do not suspect foul play. His death comes less than a month after South Korean actress Kim Sae-ron (pictured), 24, was tragically found dead at her home in Seoul after taking her own life.

Wheesung, whose real name is Choi Whee-sung, launched his career in 2002 and shot to fame in his home country. He made a name for himself thanks to his abilities as a ballad singer, and was widely credited with popularising R&B in South Korea. His unique voice and style saw him win praise from veteran Korean singers like Shin Seung-hun and Seo Tae-ji and perform around the world, including in Hollywood.

The singer went on to establish himself as a mentor and vocal coach to other K-Pop stars, working with leading artists for the last decade. He had been due to perform alongside ballad singer KCM this weekend in the city of Daegu, but the show has now been cancelled following the news. The singer found himself at the centre of controversy in 2021 when he was handed a two-year suspended sentence for abusing propofol, a powerful anesthetic which famously caused the death of Michael Jackson.

Wheesung was found dead in his home on Monday. Police said that they plan to request an autopsy on his body to determine the time of his death. They said there were no signs of foul play at the scene and are checking to see if he had left a note, The Straits Times reports. The singer’s mother, who lives in the same apartment building, had checked on him after he failed to attend a meeting with his manager earlier in the day, Yonhap News Agency reported. Wheesung’s agency, TAJOYENT, said they had a ‘heartbreaking and tragic message’ to share as they announced his passing. ‘On this day, our artist Wheesung has left us. He was found in a state of cardiac arrest at his home in Seoul and was pronounced dead. ‘The sudden news has deeply saddened the family, fellow artists from TAJOYENT, and all staff who mourn his passing.’

The singer’s death is just the latest tragedy to rock the K-Pop world. The 24-year-old published a haunting Instagram message about a tragic K-pop star before her death, commemorating the birthday of late K-pop star Moonbin. • Rosie O’Donnell confirms she moved to Ireland after Trump election:…

Rosie O’Donnell confirms she moved to Ireland after Trump election:…

Rosie O’Donnell has officially left the United States.

After hinting about her relocation last week, in a Tuesday TikTok video, the television personality confirmed she moved to Ireland on Jan. 15 with her 12-year-old daughter Dakota.

“It’s been pretty wonderful, I have to say. The people are so loving and so kind, so welcoming. And I’m very grateful,” O’Donnell, 62, said in the clip.

The comedian added that she is “in the process” of getting her Irish citizenship since her grandparents are from the country.

“I was never someone who thought I would move to another country, that’s what I decided would be the best for myself and my 12-year-old child. And here we are,” O’Donnell explained.

However, the actress admitted that she already misses the other members of her family.

“You know, I’m happy. Clay is happy. I miss my other kids. I miss my friends. I miss many things about life there at home and I’m trying to find a home here in this beautiful country and when it is safe for all citizens to have equal rights there in America, that’s when we will consider coming back.”

Alluding to policies implemented by President Donald Trump, O’Donnell explained, “It’s been heartbreaking to see what’s happening politically and hard for me personally as well. The personal is political, as we all know.”

In Dublin, the “SMILF” alum has found everyone to be “friendly” and has also “met a bunch of people” in the two months since moving across the globe.

Despite enjoying her new life, O’Donnell felt obligated to update her fans, adding she was “sorry for those of you who were worried and who missed me.”

“I just felt like we needed to take care of ourselves and make some hard decisions and follow through. And now as we’re getting settled, I was ready to post this and to tell everybody what’s been going on,” she confessed.

Concluding her TikTok video, O’Donnell signed off with some sound advice.

“Protect your sanity is all I can say. Protect your sanity as much as you can, and try not to swim in the chaos if possible, but I know it’s nearly impossible when you’re there in the middle of it,” she told her followers.

“And I think about everyone every day and the United States of America. And I am hoping that we can turn things around, counting on you, all of you, to do what’s right. And I think deep down inside, we all know what that is.”

The star’s news comes on the heels of her Instagram posts earlier this month, in which she first seemingly implied she had ditched the US for Ireland. One picture showed O’Donnell behind the wheel of a vehicle, with a caption noting that she was driving on the opposite side of the road than in America.

“Bought a little used car to tool around the countryside on the wrong side of the road,” the former “View” co-host wrote. “Hit the curb three times – thought I hit a cat !!! #newadventures ❤️.”

Another snap included Dakota sitting in the backseat of the car with a backpack next to her. O’Donnell wrote beneath the snap that she was taking her daughter to class, adding that she “can’t wait to walk to school” with her.

However, O’Donnell is not in a league of her own. Other celebrities also took the opportunity to leave the United States after President Trump was elected.

Eva Longoria and her family have fled the United States for life in Mexico and Spain.

“I had my whole adult life here,” the actress, 49, told Marie Claire in November. “But even before [the pandemic], it was changing. The vibe was different. And then COVID happened, and it pushed it over the edge. Whether it’s the homelessness or the taxes, not that I want to s-t on California — it just feels like this chapter in my life is done now.”

“The shocking part is not that he won,” Longoria said of Trump’s victory over former Vice President Kamala Harris. “It’s that a convicted criminal who spews so much hate could hold the highest office.”

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi also swapped their luxurious life in Montecito, California, for the English countryside after Trump’s win.

  • Odell Beckham Jr. Accused in Suit of Joining with Diddy to Gang Rape Woman, But Police Have Investigated Claim

Odell Beckham Jr. Accused in Suit of Joining with Diddy to Gang Rape Woman, But Police Have Investigated Claim

Odell Beckham Jr. and comedian Druski have been named as defendants in an amended complaint that also accuses Sean “Diddy” Combs of sexual assault.

The plaintiff, Ashley Parham, originally sued Combs, his business associates and multiple unnamed defendants, alleging that the music mogul raped her in 2018. The amended lawsuit now names NFL star Beckham and Druski, whose real name is Drew Desbordes.

Parham alleged that she was with a man who was FaceTiming Combs. According to the complaint, Parham said she was not “impressed” with Combs, saying she believed he had “something to do with the murder of rapper Tupac Shakur,” according to the complaint obtained by PEOPLE. She alleges Combs then told her she would “pay” for her remarks.

A month later, Parham says she was at the Northern California home of the man, also named as a defendant, when Combs allegedly showed up with multiple others, including men she now identifies as Beckham and Druski.

Parham claims Combs threatened her with a knife before allegedly sexually assaulting her with a remote control.

She also claims that Druski poured lubricant on her before jumping on top of her and using her body like a “slip and slide” before allegedly raping her.

Parham says she was also raped by a man who the others kept referring to as “Cornelius,” the complaint alleges. She now says “Cornelius” was Beckham, whose middle name is Cornelious.

Following the alleged gang rape, the lawsuit says Parham went to the Costa Contra Sheriff’s Office to report it.

In a statement to PEOPLE, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office acknowledged that had taken a report on March 23, 2018, but that they determined the “claims were unfounded.”

“We take these cases seriously, and detectives thoroughly investigated the accusations,” the spokesperson said.

Combs, Druski and Beckham have all firmly denied the accusations.

In a statement to PEOPLE, Combs’ legal team says “no sane person reading this complaint could credit this story.”

“Mr. Combs was nowhere near Orinda, California on the day Ms. Parham claims she was assaulted there, and the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Department has already confirmed Ms. Parham’s claims were determined to be unfounded following a thorough investigation,” the Bad Boy Record founder’s legal team says. “In an attempt to salvage her claims following the investigation debunking them, Ms. Parham has now invented an even wilder narrative, alleging a vast (and facially implausible) conspiracy between law enforcement, local civilians, and media industry players.”

Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Sign up for PEOPLE’s free True Crime newsletter for breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases.

Druski, who has built a large following through his internet comedy videos, denied Parham’s accusations in a social media post.

“This allegation is a fabricated lie. I wasn’t a public figure in 2018 — I was broke living with my mom without any connections to the entertainment industry at the time of this allegation, so the inclusion of my name is truly outlandish,” he wrote. “My heart breaks for actual victims of abuse, but I’m fully confident that the evidence will expose this falsehood and the individuals who are maliciously trying to game the legal system to pedal false narratives.”

Beckham, in a response to Druski’s post on X, also denied the claims.

“Boy I’ll tell u what,” he wrote. “This world makes absolutely no sense. I am covered by God. He will prevail. I kno who am I , I kno who u are, keep ur head. That name will be cleared. Shxts stupid.”

‘Moana’ has her origins questioned at trial where man says his surfer boy led to the Disney hit

Lawyers for a New Mexico writer and animator will say at closing arguments at his federal trial in Los Angeles on Monday that his work was stolen to create the Walt Disney Co.’s 2016 hit about a questing Polynesian princess, whose sequel was among the biggest hits of last year.

Buck Woodall wrote a script, whose various titles have included “Bucky the Surfer Boy,” about a teenager vacationing in Hawaii with his parents who befriends a group of Native Hawaiian youth and goes on a quest that involves time travel to the ancient islands and interactions with demigods to save a sacred part of the islands from a developer.

Woodall said he first gave the script to a distant relative by marriage who worked for another company on the Disney lot in about 2004, and a dozen years later was stunned when he saw so many of his ideas in “Moana.”

Here are some of the many similarities his lawsuit alleges:

Both “tell the story about a teenager who defies parental warnings and embarks on a dangerous voyage across Polynesian waters to save the endangered land of a Polynesian island.”

Both “involve a main character who encounters a demigod with a giant hook and tattoos.”

Both “involve protagonists who learn about ancient Polynesian culture during a sea voyage” and “a recurring theme of the Polynesian belief in spiritual ancestors” who “manifested as animals which guide and guard the living.”

Defense lawyers and witnesses — including the woman Woodall gave the script to — said no one at Disney saw his work, and that “Moana” was developed through the same cultural research and internal collaboration as its other films.

A judge ruled that Woodall filed the 2020 lawsuit too late to have a claim on the nearly $700 global box office of “Moana.” What remains are the film’s DVD and Blu-ray sales — worth $31.4 million gross with a net profit of $10.4 million. The only remaining defendant is Disney subsidiary Buena Vista Home Entertainment.

“Moana” was co-directed, along with two others, by John Musker and Ron Clements, a duo that was essential to the 1990s Disney animation renaissance that made the company a global powerhouse.

At times with other collaborators, Musker and Clements co-wrote and co-directed 1989’s “The Little Mermaid,” 1992’s “Aladdin,” 1997’s “Hercules” and 2009’s “The Princess and the Frog.”

Musker testified that they had never plagiarized, and he was angered by the accusation.

The relatively young jury of six women and two men watched “Moana” in its entirety while sitting in the courtroom and were also shown scenes from “The Little Mermaid” and other Musker and Clements films.

Musker testified that Moana’s relationship with her chief father was much like the mermaid Ariel’s with her father, King Triton.

A defense expert said that the relationship between Moana and the shapeshifting demigod Maui, voiced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, reflects Aladdin and his shapeshifting Genie, voiced by Robin Williams.

“So many of the extrinsic elements of ‘Moana’ have been in previous Musker and Clements films, indeed in Disney films going back a century,” the expert, Jeffrey Rovin testified at trial.

Woodall’s attorneys must prove the works had substantial similarity and that the defendants had access to the copyrighted work.

Both judge and jury will decide on substantial similarity, with the judge using the so-called “extrinsic test” of comparing individual elements and the jury using the “intrinsic test” of the “total concept and feel” of the two works.

Woodall in January filed a second lawsuit over “Moana 2,” which was an even bigger hit that brought in more than $1 billion globally. But the judge declined to combine the lawsuits, and the newer one, seeking as much as $10 billion, will be dealt with separately.
