James Gunn Unveils First Look at ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is currently filming in London, and with production moving smoothly, James Gunn has teased Milly Alcok’s Supergirl in the first photo from the set. Directed by Craig Gillespie from a screenplay by Ana Nogueira, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is based on the comic miniseries of the same name by writer Tom King and artist Bilquis Evely. Filming began on Jan. 13, 2025, and is expected to go until May 2025, giving it over a year of post-production before its Jun. 26, 2026, release date.

The DC Studios co-CEO unveiled the first set photo from Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow across social media, including X, Instagram, and BluSky. In the post (see below), Alcock has her back facing the camera, sitting in a chair with the House of El symbol for both Superman and Supergirl on it. The set that Alcock is facing is neon-lit, likely an alien bar. The caption reads:

“Thrilled to see cameras roll at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden on Supergirl, with Craig Gillespie at the helm and the phenomenal Milly Alcock as our Kara Zor-El. Craig brings an incredible sensibility to this story, and Milly is every inch the unique #Supergirl envisioned by Tom King, Bilquis Evely & Ana Nogueira.”

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow has assembled an impressive cast. In addition to Alcock, relative newcomer Eve Ridley will play the vital role of Ruthye Marye Knoll, a young alien woman who hires Supergirl to find the man who killed her father. The Danish Girls’ Matthias Schoenaerts will play the man they are hunting, Krem of the Yellow Hills. Oppenheimer star David Krumholtz and Into the Badlands Emily Beecham have been cast as Supergirl’s parents, Zor-El and Alura, respectively. Jason Momoa, who previously played Aquaman in the DCEU, will now play Lobo in Woman of Tomorrow. Krypto, who will appear in 2025’s Superman, is also expected to appear in the movie as he has a vital role in the comic miniseries.

‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ Reveal is Similar to How ‘Superman’ Was Revealed

The first look at Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which was early in production and teased the main hero, is similar to how James Gunn released the first teaser image of Superman. On Feb. 29, 2024, in honor of Superman’s birthday in the comics, Gunn revealed the first look at his upcoming DCU film with a shot of the Superman logo. This was a way to announce that filming had begun and give fans a brief tease of the Man of Steel. While set photos would later leak revealing the Superman costume, an official image of the new suit was not released until May 6, 2024. While this would suggest maybe a three-month timeline until the first look at Supergirl’s official costume, it feels more likely that DC and Warner Bros. might wait until after the release of Superman, as Alcock’s Supergirl herself is seemingly confirmed to appear in the upcoming DC film.

Related We Need to Talk About the Most Important Part of the ‘Superman’ Trailer

One of the best parts about the Superman trailer is the most important one, hinting at the DCEU’s future.

While fans might know more about the plot of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow compared to Superman since it draws heavily from a well-renowned comic miniseries, it is unlikely that the former will have the same amount of set photo leaks. Woman of Tomorrow is a sci-fi story on various alien planets, suggesting that the film will be primarily shot on closed soundstages as opposed to Superman, which did a lot of on-location filming, allowing for plenty of paparazzi photos. The first official photo might not be much to go off of, it is an exciting time to be a DC fan, as Creature Commandos and the recent teaser for Superman have shown fans that this is a cinematic universe worth investing in.

‘Emilia Perez’ tops Oscar nominations in fire-hit Hollywood

Transgender cartel musical “Emilia Perez” topped this year’s Oscar nominations, earning 13 nods in an announcement on Thursday postponed by the devastating Los Angeles wildfires.

French director Jacques Audiard’s Mexico-set musical, released by Netflix, shattered the record for the most Academy Award nominations for a non-English-language movie.

It was followed by epic immigrant saga “The Brutalist” and show-stopping musical adaptation “Wicked,” which each picked up 10 nominations.

Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown” and Vatican thriller “Conclave” bagged eight nods apiece.

Voting deadlines had to be extended this month, as Los Angeles — the home city of the Academy Awards — was devastated by multiple blazes that have killed more than two dozen people and forced tens of thousands to flee.

Nominees were unveiled in subdued circumstances, as a town that typically fixates on the Oscars race was instead fixated on new fires burning north of the city.

Even so, the glitzy Oscars ceremony itself is still set for March 2, and the stars and studios who have spent months and millions of dollars campaigning learned if they have made the coveted final shortlists.

“Emilia Perez,” in which a narco boss transitions to life as a woman and turns her back on crime, picked up nods for best picture, best director and best international film, as well as multiple song, score and sound nods.

Its star, Karla Sofia Gascon, became the first openly trans acting nominee in best actress, and Zoe Saldana was nominated for best supporting actress.

Their more famous co-star, Selena Gomez, who has been criticized for her Spanish-language dialogue, missed out.

Even so, the Netflix film easily surpassed the most nominated non-English-language movie ever — a record previously held by “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and “Roma,” each with 10.

In best actor, firm favorite Adrien Brody was nominated for “The Brutalist” along with Timothee Chalamet (“A Complete Unknown”), Ralph Fiennes (“Conclave”) and Colman Domingo (“Sing Sing”).

But in an unexpected pick sure to ruffle a few feathers in the new White House, the fifth and final spot went to Sebastian Stan, for his unsettling transformation into a young Donald Trump in “The Apprentice.” The movie drew threats of lawsuits from Trump’s attorneys, particularly for a scene in which the new U.S. president is shown raping his wife.

In arguably the morning’s biggest surprise, Jeremy Strong, who plays the youthful Trump’s sinister mentor Roy Cohn, was also nominated in his supporting role.

He edged out the likes of Denzel Washington (“Gladiator II”).

Meanwhile, in an intense race for best actress, A-listers Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman — who went all-out with their performances in “Maria” and “Babygirl,” respectively — missed out entirely.

Instead, comeback queen Demi Moore, who charmed the industry with her Golden Globes acceptance speech for body horror-satire “The Substance,” was nominated and is seen as the favorite.

Her rivals include Gascon, “Anora” star Mikey Madison, “Wicked” lead Cynthia Erivo and Brazil’s Fernanda Torres for “I’m Still Here.”

Billy Ray Cyrus’ Son Urges Him to Seek Help After Trump Inauguration Performance: ‘You’re Not Healthy, Dad’

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs Files $50 Million Defamation Suit Against Accuser Courtney Burgess, Lawyer Ariel Mitchell and NewsNation 20 hours ago

Billy Ray Cyrus’ son has written a pleading open letter to his father after the musician took part in Donald Trump’s Liberty Ball following the inauguration on Monday.

Trace Cyrus, also a musician who played in the band Metro Station, said in an Instagram post that Billy Ray is “not healthy” and “everyone is noticing it,” telling him that he’ll be there for him if he’s willing to accept help. Billy Ray gave a rocky performance at the Liberty Ball, struggling through technical difficulties and singing acapella while pacing about the stage.

“Since my earliest memories all I can remember is being obsessed with you and thinking you were the coolest person ever,” Trace wrote. Billy Ray adopted Trace in 1993 after marrying his now ex-wife Tish Cyrus. “I wanted to be just like you. The day you adopted me was the happiest day of my life. Sadly the man that I wanted so desperately to be just like I barely recognize now. It seems this world has beaten you down and it’s become obvious to everyone but you. You may be upset with me for posting this but I really could care less at this point.”

Trace continues by stating that he and his sisters, Miley, Brandi and Noah Cyrus, have been concerned for a long time and that Billy Ray shut them out. “Me and the girls have been genuinely worried about you for years but you’ve pushed all of us away,” he said. “Noah desperately has wanted you to be a part of her life and you haven’t even been there for her. That’s your baby girl. She deserves better. Somehow just like me she still idolizes you though. We are all hanging on to memories of the man we once knew & hoping for the day he returns.

“You’re not healthy Dad & everyone is noticing it,” Trace continued. “Just like I showed up for you at mamaws funeral when you didn’t expect me to I’m still here right now. As I write this with tears in my eyes I hope you realize this message only comes from a place of love and also fear that the world may lose you far too soon. I love you Dad. We haven’t talked in a while but I’m over a year and half clean from alcohol. Guess what? I feel amazing.. I don’t know what you’re struggling with exactly but I think I have a pretty good idea & I’d love to help you if you would open up and receive the help. You know how to reach me. Till that day comes I will continue to pray for you.”

Billy Ray’s performance was met with critical online feedback, which the “Achy Breaky Heart” singer addressed on Tuesday in his own social media post. “I wouldn’t have missed the honor of playing this event whether my microphone, guitar and monitors worked or not,” he wrote. “I was there because President Donald J. Trump invited me. I had a ball at the Liberty Ball last night and I’ve learned through all these years when the producer says ‘you’re on,’ you go entertain the folks even if the equipment goes to hell. I was there for the people and we had a blast. That’s called rock n roll!!!”

2025 Oscar Nominations: Netflix’s ‘Emilia Pérez’ Leads With 13 Nominations, Portrayal Of Donald Trump Could Win Academy Award – Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX)

A movie Donald Trump tried to block from theaters gets two Academy Award nominations.

Netflix Inc NFLX could strike gold at the Academy Awards once again with its “Emilia Pérez” the most nominated film, showing the continued strength of streaming in the movie sector.

What Happened: Netflix has now had at least one film nominated for Best Picture in each year since 2019. The streaming giant will be hoping that “Emilia Pérez” can help the company win the award for the first time.

Here are the Best Picture nominations and their respective studios and associated stocks.

“Anora”: Neon “The Brutalist”: A24 “A Complete Unknown”: Searchlight Pictures, a unit of The Walt Disney Company DIS “Conclave”: Distributed by Focus Features, a unit of Comcast Corporation CMCSA in the U.S. “Dune: Part Two”: Warner Bros. Pictures WBD “Emilia Pérez”: Netflix “I’m Still Here”: Distributed by Sony Group Corp SONY in U.S. “Nickel Boys”: Amazon MGM Studios, a unit of Amazon.com Inc AMZN “The Substance”: Mubi “Wicked”: Universal Pictures, a unit of Comcast

Emilia Pérez led the overall nominations with 13 nods, setting the record for the most nominations for a non-English language film. Actress Karla Sofía Gascón also became the first openly trans actor ever nominated for an Academy Award for her role in the film.

The film helped Netflix rank first among studios with 16 total nominations in the main categories, ranking second was A24 with 14 followed by Universal with 13.

Netflix has received plenty of nominations at the Academy Awards including for Best Picture, but has yet to win this top prize. Apple Inc AAPL became the first streaming company to win Best Picture in 2022 with “CODA.”

Last year’s most nominated film “Oppenheimer” took home seven wins including Best Picture from its 13 nominations.

Ranking second in overall nominations were “Wicked” and “The Brutalist,” which both received 10 nominations. “The Brutalist” won Best Picture-Drama at the Golden Globes, but has recently come into controversy for its use of artificial intelligence in the film, as reported by Deadline.

“Wicked” was one of the highest grossing films of 2024 and it now hopes to take home more hardware at the Academy Awards. Nominee Cynthia Erivo would become part of the elusive EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) if she wins for her role in “Wicked.”

Another top storyline could be the fact that “The Apprentice,” a movie about President Donald Trump got nominated for two Academy Awards. Trump fought to get the movie banned from theaters unsuccessfully. Sebastian Stan, who played Trump in the film, was nominated for Best Actor and Jeremy Strong, who plays Trump mentor Roy Cohn in the film, was nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

The show will pay tribute to the city of Los Angeles after the devastating wildfires. The academy recently said it would move away from live performances of original song nominees to focus on the songwriters.

“We will honor Los Angeles as the city of dreams, showcasing its beauty and resilience, as well as its role as a beacon for filmmakers and creative visionaries for over a century,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang said.

Karla Sofía Gascón Makes History as First Openly Trans Oscar-Nominated Actress

Bill Burr, Shane Gillis Announce Comedy Show to Help Fund L.A. Fire Relief

Emilia Pérez first picked up Oscar buzz when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, where film pundits praised the musical-drama-comedy’s leading lady, Karla Sofía Gascón’s performance. Gascón received her flowers Thursday morning making history as the first openly trans actress to earn an Oscar nomination.

Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Perez, follows a cartel leader, played by Gascon, who is in search of gender affirming surgery and seeks help from a Mexico city lawyer Rita, played by Zoe Saldaña. After becoming Emilia Perez, the former drug boss returns to Mexico, reunites with her estranged wife Jessi (Selena Gomez) and kids, under the guise of “Aunt Emilia,” and kickstarts a nonprofit for victims of drug violence.

Gascón previously won the best actress award alongside her Emilia Pérez stars Gomez, Saldaña, and Adriana Paz at Cannes. She’s also picked up best actress nominations at the Critics Choice, Golden Globes, and the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

As Emilia Perez won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture in a Musical or Comedy category, Gascón stood before the microphone, highlighting the importance of representation and self-actualization.

“You can maybe put us in jail,” Gascón said to the Globes audience. “You can beat us up, but you never can take away our soul, our existence, our identity.”

Although Gascón is the first openly trans actress to receive a nomination, the first Oscar nomination for a performer went to the singer Anohni in 2016 for best song. Anohni later boycotted the award ceremony. Elliot Page also received a nomination for the 2007 film Juno, and came out as trans in 2020.

Before Gascón’s transition, she starred in Mexican telenovelas like 2009’s Corazón Salvaje and the 2013 film Nosotros los Nobles. She announced her transition in 2018 autobiography, Karsia, Una Historia Extraordinaria, and picked up roles in MasterChef Celebrity Mexico and Netflix’s Rebelde.

Despite online critics bashing the film’s portrayal of transness and lack of Mexican born protagonists, Emilia Pérez picked up a leading 13 Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Original Score.

  • Taylor Swift-Themed Dance Class Killer Gets 52 Years for Stabbing Girls

Taylor Swift-Themed Dance Class Killer Gets 52 Years for Stabbing Girls

The British man who pleaded guilty this week to murdering 3 little girls in an attack at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in the UK last year has just been sentenced to 52 years in prison.

18-year-old Axel Rudakubana walked into a dance studio last summer and attacked children inside with a knife, killing 3 girls — a 6-year-old, a 7-year-old, and a 9-year-old — and injuring 10 others. He was arrested at the scene, still holding the kitchen knife he used.

Rudakubana — who was 17 at the time of the attack — was charged with murder and attempted murder, as well as producing poison, and possession of an Al-Qaeda training manual … the poison and the manual were found in his home after the attack. He pleaded not guilty in December, but changed his plea to guilty on the first day of his trial Monday.

The judge could not sentence him to life without parole due to Rudakabana being younger than 18 at the time of the attack. The Associated Press reports the judge ruled he must serve more than 51 years before being considered for parole and “it is likely he will never be released.”

The judge in the case said Rudakubana “wanted to try and carry out mass murder of innocent, happy young girls.”

In an Instagram post after the attack, Taylor told her fans she was “completely in shock” … “These were just little kids at a dance class. I am at a complete loss for how to ever convey my sympathies to these families.”

  • Robert Eggers’ next film is a werewolf horror set in medieval England

Robert Eggers’ next film is a werewolf horror set in medieval England

The director will follow his vampire remake Nosferatu with another creature-based movie – Werwulf, a werewolf horror that he has co-written and will direct.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will be set in 13th century England, featuring dialogue true to that time period, and translation and annotations to help the audience with understanding it. It was initially conceived as a black-and-white film (as his 2019 film The Lighthouse was), but that is reportedly no longer the case.

Werwulf promises to be of a piece with Eggers’ existing filmography (including 17th Century horror The Witch and Iceland-set Viking tale The Northman), which often sees him exploring mythical creatures and folklore in a long-ago time period, presented as authentically as possible.

Eggers reunites with The Northman co-writer Sjón for the new film, which is scheduled for release in the US on Christmas Day, 2026.

His work was most recently on the big screen with Nosferatu, an adaptation of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 classic vampire horror starring Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, Willem Dafoe and Bill Skarsgård.

Nosferatu received a three-star review from NME, with Lou Thomas writing: “What marks out Eggers’s take from the many adaptations of Dracula’s story is its visual style. The American filmmaker has rightfully earned a reputation for impressive looking movies but Nosferatu is perhaps the most beautiful film of the past 12 months. Teaming up with regular cinematographer Jarin Blaschke, the horror’s ornate, artistic frames are always impactful. It’s a treat for the eyes.

“There are, however, questions about whether we really need yet another faithful cover of this old tune that loom heavy over the film, just like Orlok over Wisborg. Unless you’re attempting something wildly radical, why bother? This take on Nosferatu may be essential viewing for fans of gothic horror but must be recommended with caution for everyone else.”

SZA To Join Kendrick Lamar At Apple Music’s Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show

The artists will take over the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on February 9 to perform during halftime of the NFL championship.

“Everything is smooth. I’m on the field right now,” Lamar says while on a call in the trailer for his Super Bowl performance. “You know, same old. Keeping the body in motion, getting that wind up. This field is a lot bigger than what people think, so that’s a must.”

As Lamar continues talking about his performance vision, SZA is seen creeping up on him with an orange cooler in hand.

“Now I’ve been thinking about a guest performance…,” Lamar says before SZA dumps the cooler on him, soaking him in the bright blue sports drink.

The “Not Like Us” singer, Grammy Award and Pulitzer Prize winner was confirmed to headline the Super Bowl halftime show in September 2024.

“Rap music is still the most impactful genre to date,” he said in a statement. “And I’ll be there to remind the world why. They got the right one.”

In the teaser for his performance he shared on Instagram, Lamar says, “I’ll be performing at Super Bowl LIX. Will you be pulling up? I hope so. Wear your best dress too, even if you’re watching from home.”

The teams facing off at Super Bowl LIX will be determined on January 26, when the remaining four teams will fight to come out on top of their respective conferences. The AFC Championship game will see an encounter between the Buffalo Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs, while the NFC Championship game will see the Washington Commanders and Philadelphia Eagles face off.

  • Don Lemon Thinks Matt Lauer Needs a Comeback: ‘Women Love Him’ | Video

Don Lemon Thinks Matt Lauer Needs a Comeback: ‘Women Love Him’ | Video

Lemon says “the public misses” the disgraced TV host, who was fired by NBC for sexual misconduct and later accused of rape

Don Lemon thinks audiences would love to see Matt Lauer back on TV, “now that [being] canceled is over” with Donald Trump back in office.

Speaking to the “Hollywood Raw” podcast, the former CNN anchor gushed that, as far as he can tell, “people love” the former “Today” show host, who was fired in 2017 by NBC for “inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace” which the network determined “may not have been an isolated incident.”

2 years later, in Ronan Farrow’s 2019 expose “Catch and Kill,” Lauer was accused on the record of sexually harassing several former NBC colleagues, and one former NBC producer accused him of raping her. The book also reports that Harvey Weinstein once attempted to use his knowledge of Lauer’s behavior to convince NBC to back off reporting about his own sexual misconduct. Lauer has denied all accusations.

Lemon added, “Whenever I see Matt out and about — or if we go out to dinner, my husband and I go out to dinner with him and his fiancée — people love him. Women love him! They’re like, ‘Matt, oh my God, can I get a picture? I love you. I miss you on television, blah, blah, blah.”

Lemon continued, “I think the public loves him. The public misses him, but it’s the people inside the business who are afraid.”

For his part, Lemon was fired from CNN in 2023 for remarks that were considered sexist and ageist. He briefly hosted a talk show on Elon Musk’s X, but has now found a new home on YouTube with “The Don Lemon Show.”

When asked on the podcast if Lauer could mount a comeback to the news industry, Lemon answered: “If he could come back to digital, he can set his own course.”

Lemon’s comments about Lauer begin at the 30:46 mark in the embedded video below.

Lemon suggested, “maybe in this whole Trump era where canceled is over,” there’s a greater chance for Lauer to make a comeback. “I think the general public would accept Matt back. And I think people would watch him and I think the ratings would be great,” he said.

“I don’t know anything about what happened, I know nothing about that at all,” Lemon concluded, referring to the allegations against Lauer. “Women can feel the way that they feel and I understand that but that’s their business. I know when I’m out with him, everybody loves Matt, and everybody flocks to Matt and everyone wants a picture and everyone says ‘I miss you and we wanna see you back on television.’ I hear it every time.”

Lemon clarified that he “only got to know Matt after, you know, the whole situation happened” and that they met through mutual friends. Lauer denied assaulting anyone, but admitted at the time, “there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed.”

Billy Ray’s kids ‘worried’ about him amid reported rift

Billy Ray Cyrus’ family ‘worried’ amid reported family rift: ‘You’ve pushed all of us away’

Billy Ray Cyrus’ son has shared a heartbreaking plea to his father, days after the musician’s inauguration performance.

Trace Cyrus, 35, is the biological son of Tish Cyrus, whom her ex-husband Billy Ray adopted – along with her other daughter Brandi – when they married.

Trace penned a lengthy and emotional letter to his dad on Instagram, sharing he was “worried” amid their reported family rift.

The 35-year-old posted a throwback photo of him as a kid on stage with Billy Ray.

Trace recalled wanting to be “just like” his rock star dad growing up.

“Since my earliest memories all I can remember is being obsessed with you and thinking you were the coolest person ever,” he wrote.

He recalled the day Billy Ray adopted him as the “happiest” of his life.

“Sadly the man that I wanted so desperately to be just like I barely recognise now.

“It seems this world has beaten you down and it’s become obvious to everyone but you.”

The 35-year-old then seemed to refer to his sisters, writing that he and “the girls have been genuinely worried about you for years but you’ve pushed all of us away.”

He claimed his younger sister Noah “desperately has wanted you to be a part of her life and you haven’t even been there for her,” adding she “still idolises” her dad.

“We are all hanging on to memories of the man we once knew & hoping for the day he returns. You’re not healthy Dad & everyone is noticing it.”

“As I write this with tears in my eyes I hope you realise this message only comes from a place of love and also fear that the world may lose you far too soon. I love you Dad.”

The star then shared some optimistic news to his dad:

“We haven’t talked in a while but I’m over a year and half clean from alcohol.”

Trace wrote that while he didn’t know what his dad was “struggling with exactly” he had a “pretty good idea” and offered to help.

“You know how to reach me. Till that day comes I will continue to pray for you.”

The plea comes days after Billy Rae’s chaotic performance at Trump’s inauguration, during which he experienced technical difficulties.

At points in his performance, he was speaking the lyrics.

Reports of a rift in the Cyrus family have been swirling since Billy Rae and Tish divorced in 2022.

In June 2024, Miley opened up about her complicated relationship with her dad on the My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman series.
